Microplastics and Hereditary Risk

A recent study suggests that a father’s exposure to microplastics could increase the risk of metabolic disorders, including diabetes, in his children—particularly daughters. 

Key Findings of the Study

• The University of California, Riverside-led research used mouse models to investigate how a father’s microplastic exposure affects his offspring.
• The Results: Female offspring of exposed fathers were significantly more likely to develop diabetic symptoms—such as high blood sugar—compared to those of unexposed fathers.
  • Male offspring did not develop diabetes, but did show a small, notable reduction in body fat.
  • The female mice also showed decreased muscle mass alongside their increased diabetes risk.
• While this study was conducted on mice, the researchers believe the implications are serious for human health.
