About the National Red List Roadmap and Vision 2025–2030

It outlines the comprehensive biodiversity monitoring and conservation project spearheaded by Union Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.

  • Developed by: Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) and Botanical Survey of India (BSI) in collaboration with IUCN and the Centre for Species Survival.
  • Objective:
    • Establish a science-based, nationally coordinated framework to assess and monitor India’s flora and fauna.
    • Generate reliable data to guide policy decisions, identify endangered species, and direct targeted conservation efforts.
  • Scope: Project is a five-year initiative aiming to assess the extinction risk of approximately 11,000 species (7000 species of flora and 4000 species of fauna).
  • Key Features
    • Provides baseline data for evidence-based conservation planning through 2030.
    • International alignment: Aligns with IUCN global standards and supports India’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
    • Aims to publish National Red Data Books for both flora and fauna by 2030.
  • Significance: Strengthens India’s biodiversity governance and conservation framework.
    • Enhances species documentation, threat assessment, and policy integration for protection of both terrestrial and marine biodiversity.
    • Reinforces India’s position as one of the 17 megadiverse countries, hosting nearly 8% of global flora and 7.5% of fauna, home to four global biodiversity hotspots: the Himalayas, Western Ghats, Indo-Burma, and Sundaland.
      • Despite this richness, only 6.33% of Indian plant species and 7.2% of animal species have been assessed for the Global IUCN Red List.
  • Global Context: Of the 163,000 species assessed globally under the IUCN Red List, nearly 28% are threatened with extinction, underscoring the urgency of India’s initiative to safeguard biodiversity.
