Naini Lake

Context: Naini Lake, a major attraction in Nainital, has recorded a water level of 4.7 feet, the lowest in five years.

  • Location: Situated in Nainital, Uttarakhand, also known as the “Lake District of India.”
    • The city derives its name from Naini Lake.
  • About the Lake: It is a natural freshwater lake with a crescent shape.
    • It is tectonic in origin
    • Naini lake is one of the four lakes of Kumaon hills, the others being NaukuchiaTal Lake, the Bhimtal Lake and the Sattal Lake.
    • It is the 3rd biggest lake by surface area in Uttarakhand.
  • Significance: The Naina Devi Temple is believed to mark the exact spot where one of Goddess Sati’s eyes fell, making it one of the 64 Shakti Peeths.

Concerns Over Naini Lake

  • Drinking Water Shortage: About 76% of the city’s water demand was met by the Naini Lake in 2024. The decreased water levels could affect Nainital’s drinking water supply.
  • Gauge Level Drop: Experts warn the lake may fall below its normal gauge level, impacting water availability.
    • The lake has reached its zero level more than 10 times since 2000, compared to only twice in the 1900s.
  • Eutrophication: The lake is eutrophic to high nutrient accumulation and growth of phytoplankton.

Reasons for Naini Lake’s Declining Water Levels

  • Man-Made Manipulations: Unplanned construction, encroachment, and degradation of recharge zones hinder water infiltration.
  • Siltation and Pollution: Increased siltation, debris dumping, and untreated wastewater contribute to water quality and volume loss.
  • Climate Change: Rising temperatures and reduced rainfall and snowfall have worsened water depletion.
