Sadhna Saptah 2026

Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Sadhna Saptah 2026 in New Delhi to strengthen the capacity building of civil servants.

About the Sadhna Saptah 2026

  • It is a week-long initiative to enhance capacity, performance, and efficiency of civil servants across India.
  • Objective: To align civil servants’ capacity building with the goal of Viksit Bharat (Developed India) and improve governance outcomes.
  • Organising Bodies: Conducted by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Capacity Building Commission, and Karmayogi Bharat.
  • Key Features: 
    • Alignment with Mission: Linked to Mission Karmayogi, aiming to build a future-ready, competent, and citizen-centric civil service.
    • Learning Platform: Utilises the iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) platform for structured capacity-building programs.
    • Focus Areas: Covers technology, artificial intelligence, behavioural, functional, and domain-specific skills.

Burkina Faso

Context: India recently provided humanitarian food aid to Burkina Faso to support food security in the conflict-affected Sahel region.

  • The Sahel is a 5,000-kilometer-long, semiarid savanna belt acting as a transition zone between the Sahara Desert and the Sudanian savanna across North-Central Africa.
  • It includes all or parts of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, and Eritrea.

About Burkina Faso

  • Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, is a landlocked West African country with its capital at Ouagadougou.
  • Location: It is situated in western Africa and uniquely straddles the Prime Meridian, placing it in both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
  • Borders: It shares borders with Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast, and Togo, Ghana, and Ivory Coast to the south.
  • Climate and Vegetation: The country experiences a tropical climate with predominantly savannah vegetation, while the northern Sahel region is arid and semi-desert.
  • Relief and Mountains: Burkina Faso is largely a plateau region with gentle undulations and low mountains mainly located in the southwest.
  • Water Bodies: It lacks major perennial rivers, though seasonal rivers like the Volta tributaries flow during the rainy season.
  • Historical Background: It was part of French West Africa from 1896, gained independence in 1960, and was renamed Burkina Faso in 1984.
  • Language: French is the official language used in administration and education, while indigenous languages like Moore are widely spoken.

 

Rice’s Whale

Context: The expanded oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico may push Rice’s whale towards extinction due to increased ecological risks.

About the Rice’s Whale

  • Rice’s whale is a baleen whale species (family Balaenopteridae), identified as distinct only in 2021.
  • Population: An estimated population of fewer than 100 individuals, making it among the rarest whales globally.
  • Distribution: Endemic to the Gulf of Mexico, making it one of the most geographically restricted whales.
  • Diet: It primarily feeds on silver-rag driftfish, relying on specific prey availability.
  • Reproduction: It reproduces every 2–3 years and reaches sexual maturity at around 9 years, indicating slow population growth.
  • Threats: Major threats include oil drilling, vessel strikes, noise pollution, oil spills, and climate change.
  • Conservation Status: Listed as Critically Endangered on IUCN Red List.

Bab al-Mandab Strait

Context: Strategic analysts have warned that the Bab el-Mandab strait could emerge as a new flashpoint in the US-Iran war.

About Bab al-Mandab Strait

  • Geographic Location: 
    • The Bab el-Mandab Strait is about 30 kilometres wide at its narrowest point and lies between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula to the northeast and Eritrea and Djibouti (Horn of Africa) on the west.
    • It is divided into two channels by Perim Island.
  • The Bab al-Mandab strait is part of the Red Sea with Yemen situated on one side of it.
    • The Strait’s name literally translates to “Gate of Tears”.
  • Volume of Trade: It accounts for roughly 12 percent of global trade
    • The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that in 2025 about 4.2 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum liquids crossed the Bab al-Mandab Strait per day
