India hosted its inaugural country session at Nor-Shipping 2025, jointly organized by the Ministry of Ports and the Indian Embassy in Norway.

Shipbuilding Vision for 2047: India aims to become one of the top five shipbuilding nations in the world by the year 2047.

  • Infrastructure Investment: India has committed USD 20 billion towards infrastructure development, focusing on enhancing multimodal logistics, port connectivity, and trade facilitation.
  • Maritime Corridors: India is enhancing its global maritime connectivity through key corridors such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
  • Green Hydrogen Port Hubs: Three Indian ports namely Kandla, Tuticorin, and Paradip—are being developed as Green Hydrogen Hubs to produce and use clean fuels in the maritime sector.
  • Green Voyage 2050: India is playing a leadership role in the Green Voyage 2050 initiative, assisting other developing nations in transitioning to low-carbon maritime operations.

About Hong Kong Convention

  • The Hong Kong Convention addresses all environmental and safety aspects relating to ship recycling.
  • The Convention places responsibilities and obligations on all parties concerned – shipowners, ship building yards, ship recycling facilities, flag States, port States, and recycling States – regarding the responsible management and disposal of associated waste streams in a safe and environmentally sound manner.

    • Green Voyage 2050 is a joint initiative by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Government of Norway, launched to support decarbonization of the global maritime sector.
  • Ship Recycling: India showcased its Hong Kong Convention-compliant ship recycling framework, presenting itself as a leader in environmentally regulated and high-capacity ship recycling, contributing to the circular economy.
  • Digital Transformation of Maritime Services: India’s maritime ecosystem is undergoing a digital revolution through initiatives like: ONOP (One Nation-One Port Process), National Logistics Portal (Marine), MAITRI.
    • One Nation One Port Process (ONOP): The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has launched ‘One Nation One Port Process (ONOP)’ initiative which focuses on mapping and standardizing port processes and documentation.
    • National Logistics Portal (Marine):  is a national maritime single window platform encompassing complete end-to-end logistics solutions to help exporters, importers, and service providers exchange documents seamlessly and transact business.
    • MAITRI: MAITRI is a digital platform that powers the Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC) streamlining cross-border trade using Artificial Intelligence and blockchain. 
      • It aims to reduce processing time, enhance efficiency, and position India as a global leader in trade facilitation.
  • Seafarer Workforce Collaboration: India is the second-largest provider of seafarers to Norwegian-owned vessels. The Minister called for enhanced Indo-Norwegian collaboration in seafarer recruitment and training.
