Context: 

The Union government began a year-long celebration of Santh Sevalal Maharaj’s 284th birth anniversary, a spiritual and religious leader of the Banjara community, a nomadic community that has been declared a Scheduled Tribe (ST) in some Indian states.

About Sant Sevalal Maharaj:

  • Early life and birthplace: He was born in Surgondankoppa in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka on February 15, 1739.
  • Samadhi Sthal: The Samadhi Sthal of Sant Sevalal is situated in Manora taluk of Washim District of Maharashtra at Pohradevi, which is also known as Banjara Kashi.
  • Contributions to society: Sant Sevalal used his knowledge and skills in ayurveda and naturopathy to dispel myths and superstitions prevalent in the tribal communities. 
    • He brought about reforms in their way of life and advocated against blind beliefs and animal sacrifices. 
    • He also preached to respect parents and women, and to lead a life that protects nature and wildlife.
