Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has accorded environmental clearance to the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project on the Chenab River in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir. 

  • This clearance marks the first major hydropower project on the Indus river system to be approved following India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) on April 23, 2025.

About the Sawalkote Hydroelectric Project

  • Type: Run-of-the-river project on the Chenab River
  • Location: Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir
  • Implementing Agency: National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) in 2021
  • Installed Capacity: 1,856 MW
  • Electricity Generation: Approx. 8,000 million units annually
  • Estimated Cost: Increased from ₹22,000 crore (2017) to ₹31,380 crore (2025)

Significance of the Project

Strategic Importance

  • The Sawalkote project holds strategic significance as it strengthens India’s ability to utilise the full potential of the eastern Indus rivers after the suspension of the IWT.
  • It is one of the largest hydropower projects on the Chenab River, reinforcing India’s presence and control over its share of Indus basin waters.

Economic and Energy Impact

  • The project will boost hydropower capacity in Jammu and Kashmir, contributing to clean energy goals and energy security.
  • It is expected to generate employment and attract private investment, supported by J&K’s upcoming new hydropower policy.

About Chenab River 

  • Origin : The Chenab River originates at Tandi in Himachal Pradesh from the confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers.
    • It flows northwest through Himachal Pradesh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir before entering Pakistan.
  • Tributaries and Distributaries: Major tributaries include the Marusudar, Jhelum, and Sohan rivers.
    • It eventually merges with the Sutlej River in Pakistan, which later joins the Indus.
  • Significance: Chenab is vital for agriculture in the Chenab Valley and supports multiple hydropower projects
    • It also sustains ecological diversity and aquatic life.
  • Cultural Importance: The Chenab features in local myths and flows past historic temples and forts, reflecting its cultural and historical significance.
