Recently, a Southern Birdwing butterfly has been found on the satellite campus of The American College in Madurai district of Tamil Nadu.

About Southern Birdwing Butterfly

  • Second Largest Butterfly: With a wingspan of 194 mm, the female of the Golden Birdwing (India’s Largest Butterfly) is marginally larger than the Southern Birdwing (190 mm)
    • Male Golden Birdwing → 106 mm
  • Scientific Name: Troides minos
  • Protection Status (IUCN) : Least Concern
  • It is the state butterfly of Karnataka.
  • Endemic to South India → Majorly in the Western Ghats.
    • Western Ghats → UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the 36 biodiversity hotspots in the world.
