The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released a report on the Gross Value of Output (GVO) for agriculture and allied activities from 2011–12 to 2023–24, highlighting shifts in sectoral contributions.
Gross Value of Output (GVO) represents the total value of goods and services produced within an economy during a specific period, before deducting the cost of intermediate inputs.

Key Highlights from the Report
Overall Agriculture & Allied Sector Output
- Gross Value Added (GVA) at current prices rose by ~225%, while Gross Value of Output (GVO) at constant (2011–12) prices increased by ~54.6% from FY12 to FY24
- The GVO growth reflects steady expansion in the agriculture and allied sectors over the 12-year period.
Crop Sector
- Crop sector remains the largest contributor, with a share of 54.1% in total GVO in 2023–24.
- Cereals and Fruits & Vegetables together accounted for 52.5% of total crop GVO in 2023–24.
- Within cereals, paddy and wheat alone constituted 85% of the cereal GVO.
- Top Cereals Producers (2023–24):

- Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, and Haryana together contributed nearly 53% of total cereal GVO.
- Uttar Pradesh maintained its lead despite a drop in share from 18.6% to 17.2%.
- Fruits
- In 2023–24, bananas surpassed mango as the top fruit in GVO terms.
- Mango was the top contributor in the fruit category from 2011–12 to 2021–22.Vegetables: Potato remained the top vegetable.

- Floriculture: Nearly doubled in GVO, rising from ₹17.4 to ₹28.1 thousand crore, indicating growing commercial interest.
- Condiments & Spices: Madhya Pradesh became the top contributor in 2023–24 with 19.2% share, followed by Karnataka (16.6%) and Gujarat (15.5%).
Livestock Sector
- Share of livestock in total agriculture GVO rose from 25.6% (2011–12) to 31.2% (2023–24), making it one of the fastest-growing sub-sectors.
- Milk remained dominant in livestock GVO, but its share declined slightly from 67.2% to 65.9%.
- Meat group share rose from 19.7% to 24.1% in total livestock GVO.
Fishing and Aquaculture
- Sector’s contribution to GVO rose significantly from 4.2% to 7.0%.
- Within the sector, Inland fish share declined from 57.7% to 50.2% while Marine fish share increased from 42.3% to 49.8%.
- Major state-wise shifts in fishery GVO were seen, especially in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh between 2011–12 and 2022–23.

Government Initiatives for Agriculture & Allied Sectors
- National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture (NMSA): Promotes climate-resilient farming with focus on rainfed areas, integrated farming, water use efficiency, and soil health.
- Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY): Aims for “Har Khet Ko Pani” and “More crop per drop” by improving irrigation infrastructure and water use efficiency.
- Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): Encourages organic farming through farmer clusters to produce pesticide-free, high-quality crops and improve soil health.
- Soil Health Card Scheme: Provides farmers with nutrient status of their soil and customized fertilizer recommendations to improve soil productivity.
- National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Areas (NWDPRA): Focuses on integrated watershed management to conserve natural resources, boost productivity, and restore ecological balance.
- Fisheries & Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF): Enhances infrastructure for marine & inland fisheries.
- Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY): Formalise and strengthen the fisheries sector; Supports micro & small enterprises and infrastructure like fish landing centers, hatcheries.
- Agriculture Infrastructure Fund: Supports post-harvest infrastructure, including storage, cold chains, and processing.
