Context:
The first-ever Sundarban bird festival was organized by the Sundarban Tiger Reserve (STR) division of the West Bengal Forest Department.
About Sundarban Bird Festival:
- Aim: To create a platform for knowledge-sharing and discussion on the future of conservation of the Sundarban birds.
- Significance: The main reason for organizing such a festival is to record occurrence, distribution, and habitat preferences of some birds needing special attention which use Central Asian as their migration route in Asia while passing over the Sundarbans.
- A publication by Zoological Survey of India, (ZSI) in 2021, had recorded 428 bird species in the Sundarbans which is one third of all the avian species found in the country.
