Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a three-nation tour to Jordan, Ethiopia, and Oman.

About the visit of PM Modi

  • The tour is aimed to strengthen India’s bilateral ties with strategic partners in West Asia and Africa.
  • A primary goal is to finalize major trade deals to expand India’s economic partnerships.
  • In each country,Prime Minister Modi engaged with the local Indian community, recognizing their role as a “living bridge”

Jordan Visit

  • The Prime Minister concluded a two-day visit to Jordan, held at the invitation of King Abdullah II. 
  • This high-level diplomatic engagement coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan.

  • Five agreements signed in areas like renewable energy and cultural exchange, with a goal to increase bilateral trade to $5 billion.
  • Strengthened Political Ties: Both countries agreed to work as trusted partners and sustain momentum through regular high-level engagement.
  • Economic & Trade Growth: Discussions focused on the steady bilateral trade (valued at $2.3 billion in 2024) and the need to diversify.
  • Enhanced Regional Connectivity: Jordan’s strategic location was identified as key for enhancing logistics and private-sector collaboration.

  • Location: Jordan is located in the middle east bordered by Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and Palestine.
  • History: Independent since 1946. Made peace with Israel in 1994 and plays a key role in Middle Eastern diplomacy.
  • Key Monuments and Locations:
    • Petra: The iconic “Rose City,” a UNESCO World Heritage site and ancient Nabataean capital. 
    • The Dead Sea: The lowest point on Earth, famous for its hyper-saline water that allows swimmers to float effortlessly.

PM’s Ethiopia Visit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day bilateral visit to Ethiopia marks his first official visit to the country.
  • Address to Parliament: PM addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament. 
  • High Honor Awarded: PM Modi was bestowed with the ‘Great Honor Nishan of Ethiopia’, the country’s highest state award.

Major Outcomes and Agreements with Ethiopia

  • New Relationship Status: The most significant outcome was the mutual agreement to elevate India-Ethiopia relations to a ‘Strategic Partnership’.
  • Key Agreements Signed: Three key agreements/MoUs were exchanged:
    • Cooperation in United Nations Peacekeeping Operations Training.
    •  Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters.
    • Establishment of a Data Centre at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  • Broader Cooperation Areas: New collaboration areas were identified in health security, digital public infrastructure, and clean energy. 
    • India also pledged support to upgrade the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Addis Ababa and double scholarships for Ethiopian students.

    • With the 1993 secession of Eritrea, Ethiopia became landlocked.
  • Capital: Addis Ababa
  • Bordering Countries: Eritrea to the north, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Kenya to the south, and South Sudan and Sudan to the west.
  • Ethiopia also hosts the African Union and UN Economic Commission for Africa headquarters.
  • Diplomatic Hub: As the host of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia is often called the “diplomatic capital of Africa.”

  • Key Objective: Mark 70 years of diplomatic relations and advance the Strategic Partnership.
  • Invitation: PM Modi is visiting at the invitation of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik of Oman.
    • This marks the PM’s second official visit to Oman.
    • The visit reciprocates the state visit of Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to India in December 2023.
  • Focus Areas: Comprehensive review of trade, investment, energy, and defence. 
    • A key expected outcome is the signing of a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
