UN Road Safety Financing Project in India: Reducing Road Crash Deaths by 2030

The United Nations has launched a UN Road Safety financing project in four Indian States to curb road traffic deaths.

About UN Road Safety Financing Project

  • The initiative is a partnership between the United Nations and the States of Rajasthan, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Assam to strengthen road safety governance and financing mechanisms.
  • Objective:
    • To build national and sub-national capacities for implementing road safety action plans and
    • To reduce fatalities and serious injuries in line with the Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021–2030) target of 50% reduction.
  • Funding and Assistance: The programme is funded through the UN Road Safety Fund and coordinated by the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office.
    • It supports policy design, institutional strengthening, enforcement mechanisms, and post-crash response systems.
  • Pilot Implementation: The four States will serve as pilot regions for developing a structured road safety financing framework that can be replicated across India.

Need for Road Safety Project in India

  • High Fatality Burden: India records nearly 600 road crash deaths daily, imposing a major public health crisis.
  • Economic Loss: Road accidents are estimated to cost around 7% of GDP due to healthcare expenses, productivity loss, and long-term disabilities.
  • Weak Enforcement and Infrastructure: Gaps in road engineering, traffic enforcement, signage, and vehicle fitness checks contribute to preventable accidents.
  • Inadequate Post-Crash Care: Limited trauma care and emergency response systems increase fatality rates and long-term disability outcomes.
