Warships launched at Chennai shipyard

Context: 

Recently,  two warships of different classes were launched into the water at Chennai shipyard which were built by the Kolkata based defence shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

Ships Launched:

• Anjadip: The third Anti­-Submarine Shallow Water Craft (ASWSWC)
• Sanshodhak: The fourth Survey Vessel Large (SVL)

About ASWSWC:

• The Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASWSWC) corvettes, are a class of anti-submarine warfare (ASW) vessels currently being built for the Indian Navy, by Cochin Shipyard (CSL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE).
• They were conceived as a replacement to the ageing Abhay-class corvettes of the Indian Navy.
• Other 2 ASWSWC: Arnala, Androth

Capabilities of ASWSWC: 

• Conducting anti-submarine operations in coastal waters
• Low intensity maritime operations (LIMO) 
• Mine laying operations. 
• Full-scale subsurface surveillance of coastal waters and various surface platforms and coordinated ASW operations with aircraft

About Survey Vessel (Large) ships:

• The Survey Vessel (Large) ships are 110 m long, 16 m wide with deep displacement of 3400 tons.
• Survey vessels -large (SVL) ships will replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships with new generation hydrographic equipment to collect oceanographic data. 

• Primary role: 
  1. To undertake full scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports and navigational channels.
  2. To collect oceanographic and geophysical data for defence as well as civil applications. 

• Secondary role: Providing limited defence, besides serving as Hospital ships during emergencies. 
• Other 3 SVL: Sandhayak, Nirdeshak, Ikshak
