WHO on COVID Origins

Context: 

The WHO recently urged all countries to reveal what they know about the origins of COVID­19, following U.S. claims of a Chinese lab leak and furious denials from Beijing.

Background:

  • The first infections with the new coronavirus were recorded in late 2019 in the Chinese city, which hosts a virus research laboratory.

  • World Health Organization’s Guideline:
    • The World Health Organization’s Director General said, “If any country has information about the origins of the pandemic, it’s essential for that information to be shared with WHO and the international scientific community”.
  • FBI’s Lab Origin Theory: WHO’S urge came in the backdrop of the recent statement of US FBI director about origins of coronavirus.
    • The FBI director said that the U.S. Federal Bureau of In­vestigation (FBI) had assessed the source of COVID­19 pandemic was “most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan”. 
  • China’s Stand: 
    • Chinese officials have angrily denied the FBI claim, calling it a smear campaign against Beijing.
