UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)

India’s Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve in Himachal Pradesh was included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) during the 37th International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) session held  in Hangzhou, China, recently.

  • It gathered UNESCO Member States, scientists, and experts to review biosphere reserves, promote sustainability, and strengthen global cooperation on biodiversity conservation.

About World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR)

  • It is a global network of protected areas under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.

About Man and Biosphere (MAB)

  • MAB is an intergovernmental scientific program, launched in 1971 by UNESCO, that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.

  • Purpose: It promotes biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and community participation through protected ecosystems.
  • Collaboration: The network fosters North-South and South-South cooperation, enabling the exchange of knowledge, practices, and capacity building for ecological management.
  • The World Network of Biosphere Reserves now includes 785 sites in 142 countries

habitat for the Royal Bengal tiger.

Nanda Devi Uttarakhand 2004 Western Himalayas

Rich biodiversity including snow leopard and Himalayan black bear.

Nokrek Meghalaya 2009 Eastern hills

Home to red pandas and diverse flora.

Pachmarhi Madhya Pradesh 2009 Central India 

Rich in biodiversity and endemic species.

Indian giant squirrel (also called Nanhi) and the flying squirrel.

Simlipal Odisha 2009 Deccan Peninsula

Known for its tiger population and rich flora.

Great Nicobar Andaman & Nicobar Islands 2013 Islands habitat for Nicobar pigeon and diverse marine life.

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh 2012 Central India; rich in biodiversity and water resources.

Known for Tiger reserve.

Agasthyamalai Kerala,

Tamil Nadu

2016 Western Ghats

Known for Asian Elephant Conservation.

Home to unique flora and fauna such as Agasthyamalai Bambootail damselfly.

Khangchendzonga Sikkim 2018 Eastern Himalayas

Snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan black bears, etc.

Rich biodiversity and cultural significance.

Panna Madhya Pradesh 2020 Central India; known for its tiger population and rich flora.
Cold Desert Himachal Pradesh 2025 It was declared a Biosphere sphere in 2009.

Trans-Himalayan region (Lahaul-Spiti district).

It covers the Pin Valley National Park and its surroundings, Chandratal and Sarchu & Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.

Habitat for snow leopard, blue sheep, and unique alpine flora.
