Artemis II Mission 

The Artemis II Mission recently launched, representing a crucial step in the broader Artemis program. This program aims to re-establish human presence on and around the Moon, serving as a foundation for future deep space exploration, including potential missions to Mars. This current mission significantly progresses towards achieving these ambitious objectives.

The Artemis program unfolds in distinct phases, each building upon the last to achieve its long-term goals.

• Artemis I (2022): This was an uncrewed test mission. Its primary goal was to thoroughly test the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit, ensuring safe lunar trajectories without a human crew.
• Artemis II (Current Mission): This mission includes four astronauts and is designed as a Lunar Fly-by Mission. It involves orbiting the Moon but not landing, focusing on testing systems and human capabilities in deep space.

    • Christina Koch: The first woman to venture into deep space.
    • Victor Glover: The first Black person to participate in a lunar mission.
    • Jeremy Hansen (from Canada): The first non-American to travel beyond Earth’s orbit.
• Artemis III (Future): This phase is planned to involve astronauts landing on the Moon, notably including a woman and a person of color, marking a historic return to the lunar surface.
• Artemis IV (Future): Focuses on establishing essential infrastructure on the Moon, such as the Gateway Space Station. This infrastructure will support long-term human presence on the Moon and act as a base for future Mars missions.

The Artemis program signifies a major return to deep space exploration after a prolonged hiatus. The last human lunar landing mission, NASA’s Apollo 17, occurred in 1972. After approximately 50 years, the Artemis program aims to revive and sustain both lunar and deep space missions.

Mission Trajectory (Artemis II)

The mission originates from the Kennedy Space Center. The spacecraft will first orbit Earth, then travel towards the Moon for a lunar fly-by from the Far Side of the Moon. Following various experiments, it will return to Earth, concluding with a splash down in the Pacific Ocean. The entire mission is expected to last approximately 10 days.

Objectives of Artemis II (without Landing)

The primary objectives of this lunar fly-by mission are:

• Monitor deep space systems, including life support, navigation, communication, and radiation protection systems.
• Test human safety and readiness for future lunar landings.
• Evaluate piloting capability and emergency response systems.
• Assess the ability to sustain human presence beyond Earth’s orbit for extended periods.

This mission also promotes International cooperation, with participation from American and Canadian personnel, strengthening partnerships between agencies like NASA and the Canadian Space Agency.

Sadhana Saptah

The Prime Minister recently launched Sadhana Saptah (meaning ‘Week of Endeavour’) in New Delhi. This initiative aims to enhance the performance, efficiency, and capacity of civil servants.

Sadhana Saptah is closely linked to Mission Karmayogi, a government program dedicated to capacity building for civil servants. The concept of a “Karmayogi,” derived from the Shreemad Bhagwad Geeta, describes an individual who performs duties without attachment to results and commits their life to public service. 

Sadhana Saptah endeavors to make civil servants more competent and citizen-centric, aligning their efforts with the vision of “Vikashit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047.

Organization

Sadhana Saptah is organized collaboratively by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Capacity Building Commission, and Karmayogi Bharat. The initiative leverages the iGOT platform (Integrated Government Online Training) for its training delivery.

The curriculum covers a wide range of areas, including technology, AI, behavioral aspects, and domain-specific skills, providing comprehensive training designed to address the evolving needs of civil service.

The Rice Whale is a critically endangered species, making its characteristics important to understand. It is a type of Baleen whale.

Baleen Whales employ a unique feeding strategy known as filter feeding. They take in vast quantities of water containing small organisms like plankton and krill. They then use baleen plates, which are like large bristles in their mouths, to filter the water out while trapping the food inside. Key Facts about Rice Whales

• Population: Extremely rare, with fewer than 100 individuals remaining worldwide.
• Discovery: Identified as a distinct species only in 2021.
• IUCN Status: Critically Endangered.
• Habitat: Exclusively found in the Gulf of Mexico. They do not inhabit any other part of the world.
• Diet: Primarily consume Silver Rag Drift fish.
• Reproduction: They reproduce slowly, typically once every 2-3 years, and reach sexual maturity at 9 years of age, significantly hindering rapid population growth.
