Discover the Dhruv Scheme, a Government of India initiative to identify and nurture exceptionally talented students from Classes 9 to 12.
The Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme ‘DHRUV’ is a visionary initiative of the Indian government, backed by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development. Launched on October 10, 2019, by Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’ this program is designed to nurture the exceptional abilities of gifted children and inspire them to achieve excellence in alignment with their potential.
The ‘DHRUV’ initiative, led by the Government of India and supported by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, is a pioneering effort to enhance the skills and knowledge of gifted children. Launched with the vision of promoting excellence in alignment with each child’s potential, ‘DHRUV’ is a catalyst for societal development.
The program is designed to encompass two main areas: Science and Arts. The launch of the program is set to take place at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Approximately 60 students, generally ranging from Class 9 to Class 12, are selected from various regions across the country.
The program seeks to encourage and enrich the skills and knowledge of talented children through mentoring and guidance.
Renowned experts across the nation will mentor children in centers of excellence, fostering an environment where they can reach their full potential.
With a spotlight on Arts and Science, ‘DHRUV’ aims to provide a balanced platform for around 60 students selected from classes 9 to 12 nationwide.
As part of the Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme (PMILP), ‘DHRUV’ aims to instill confidence in young students, motivating them to explore new horizons and contribute to societal and national betterment.
The name ‘DHRUV,’ derived from the pole star “Dhruv Tara,” signifies the program’s aim to guide young minds as a steadfast point of inspiration. The unveiling took place at the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru, attended by key dignitaries including Union HRD Minister, ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan, Wing Cdr. Rakesh Sharma, and Professor K Vijay Raghavan, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
The program spans interests ranging from science to performing arts, encouraging holistic development. The inaugural batch, commencing in October 2019, comprised 60 outstanding students selected from both public and private schools across India.
Designed to encourage young and talented students, the program spans various fields of interest, including science, performing arts, and creative writing. With a commitment to holistic development, ‘DHRUV’ aims to inspire excellence in diverse domains. Students were divided into two main streams: 30 in science and 30 in performing arts. Further division into three groups of ten in each stream allowed for personalized attention. Scientific projects under expert guidance were assigned to the science group, while the performing arts group, mentored by cultural icons, focused on choreography and acting.
All six teams, irrespective of their stream, were given themes addressing global challenges such as climate change, pollution, and terrorism. This approach reflects the program’s commitment to instilling a sense of social responsibility and awareness among participants.
While the initial focus was on science and the arts, the Government of India envisions expanding the program into additional streams and sectors. This expansion aims to facilitate the creative development of children nationwide, providing them with opportunities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
The core objectives include coaching outstanding students aged 9 to 12 and exposing them to renowned specialists in science and the arts. This holistic approach, implemented in centers of excellence across the country, seeks to empower young minds to reach their full potential and actively contribute to societal and national progress.
The first batch of the DHRUV program showcased the exceptional talents of 60 students, illustrating the transformative impact of the 14-day curriculum. The projects and choreography undertaken by these young minds exemplify the power of innovation and creativity when coupled with a sense of social responsibility.
In essence, the Pradhan Mantri Innovative Learning Programme is not merely a project but a transformative journey for the nation’s most promising young minds, empowering them to shape the future of our society and country.
While initially focused on two key sectors, the Government of India envisions extending the program to various streams and sectors, fostering innovative development across the country.
In essence, ‘DHRUV’ stands as a beacon, illuminating the path for gifted children to realize their potential, contribute meaningfully to society, and become catalysts for positive change. As the program evolves, it serves as a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and holistic development among the nation’s youth.
The initial iteration of the DHRUV program commenced in October 2019. Sixty exceptionally talented students were chosen for this inaugural batch, with a focus on two domains: Science and Performing Arts. The selection encompassed 30 students from each domain, drawing participants from diverse geographic locations nationwide. The chosen students spanned across classes 9 to 12, representing both government and private schools.
A 14-day intensive program was organized for the participants, where students from the Science and Performing Arts streams were segregated into two distinct groups. Further division into three groups of 10 each was done for both streams. Under the guidance of scientific experts, the Science groups were tasked with producing projects, while the Performing Arts groups, under the mentorship of cultural icons, were required to choreograph and present a program. All six teams were assigned themes revolving around global issues such as environmental change, pollution, terrorism, and more.
