Gallantry Awards 2025 serves as a profound recognition of the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness exhibited by the personnel of India’s Armed Forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), and civilians in the face of danger. These Gallantry Awards 2025, granted by the President of India, honour acts of valour in different circumstances, including combat situations, and in non-combat roles that contribute to national security.

On Republic Day 2025, President Droupadi Murmu approved 93 gallantry awards for personnel from the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces. The awards include 2 Kirti Chakras, 14 Shaurya Chakras, 1 Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry), 66 Sena Medals, 2 Nao Sena Medals, and 8 Vayu Sena Medals. Notably, several of these awards have been granted posthumously, honouring the ultimate sacrifices made by the recipients in the line of duty.

Gallantry in the Face of Enemy

This category includes:

  • Param Vir Chakra (PVC) – The highest gallantry award in India, awarded for the most conspicuous bravery or self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy.
  • Mahavir Chakra (MVC) – Given for acts of conspicuous gallantry in the face of the enemy.
  • Vir Chakra – Awarded for gallantry in the presence of the enemy.

Gallantry Other than in the Face of Enemy

This category includes:

  • Ashoka Chakra – Recognizes the most conspicuous bravery rather than in the face of the enemy.
  • Kirti Chakra – Awarded for conspicuous gallantry in non-combat situations.

Historical Background of Gallantry Awards 

  • Established: Param Vir Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, and Vir Chakra were established on January 26, 1950, but deemed effective from August 15, 1947.
    • The Ashoka Chakra Class-I, Class-II, and Class-III were instituted on January 4, 1952, and later renamed as Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra in January 1967.
  • Order of Precedence: Param Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Mahavir Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Vir Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.

Gallantry Awards 2025 Winners List

On the eve of the 76th Republic Day, President Smt. Droupadi Murmu approved the conferral of Gallantry awards to 93 personnel from the Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces, including 12 posthumous awards. These prestigious awards include:

  • Param Vir Chakra Winners List: While no Param Vir Chakra was awarded this year, the honour remains the embodiment of valour.
  • Kirti Chakra: Awarded to Major Manjit Kumar and Naik Dilwar Khan (posthumously) for counter-terrorist operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Shaurya Chakra: 14 recipients, including three posthumous awards, recognized acts of heroism in diverse operational environments.
  • Sena Medal Winners List: 66 recipients, with seven posthumously honoured, showcased exceptional bravery.

The Nao Sena Medal (2 awards) and Vayu Sena Medal (8 awards) highlighted gallantry in maritime and aerial operations, respectively.

In addition to these Gallantry awards, the President also approved 305 defence decorations for various personnel. These include:

  • 30 Param Vishisht Seva Medals
  • Five Uttam Yudh Seva Medals
  • 57 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals
  • 10 Yudh Seva Medals
  • One Bar to Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty)
  • 43 Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty)
  • Eight Nao Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty)
  • 15 Vayu Sena Medals (Devotion to Duty)
  • Four Bars to Vishisht Seva Medal
  • 132 Vishisht Seva Medals

These awards highlight the courage, dedication, and sacrifice made by the armed forces and central armed police forces in serving the nation.

Sena Medal Winners List 2025

The Sena Medal is awarded for acts of gallantry on land, both in active combat and non-combat situations. In 2025, the list included 66 recipients, seven of whom were honoured posthumously. These medals celebrate the heroism of individuals serving in the Indian Army across various operations, from counter-terrorism to disaster relief.

Selection and Eligibility for Gallantry Awards 2025

The process for awarding Gallantry Awards 2025 begins with the submission of recommendations by the Armed Forces, CAPFs, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Home Affairs evaluate these recommendations, which are then considered by the Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC). This Committee includes high-ranking officials, such as the Raksha Mantri and Service Chiefs, who review the candidates’ acts of bravery.

For the Gallantry Awards 2025, the final selection of awardees was made with approval from the Prime Minister and the President of India. Then these awards were announced on Republic Day 2025. The names of the awardees have been included in the Gallantry Awards 2025 winners list.

Highest Gallantry Award in India List The Param Vir Chakra

The highest gallantry award in India is the Param Vir Chakra. It holds immense prestige and is awarded for the most conspicuous bravery during combat. The medal is awarded to individuals who risk or sacrifice their lives for the nation. The Param Vir Chakra winners list is a small yet renowned group of soldiers who have become national icons for their extraordinary acts of valour.

The Param Vir Chakra (PVC) has been awarded 21 times, of which 14 were awarded posthumously, and 16 arose from actions in Indo-Pakistani conflicts.

Investiture Ceremony

The Gallantry Awards 2025 has been granted at the prestigious Investiture Ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, on Republic Day (26th January 2025). The ceremony is attended by high-ranking officials, and the President of India presents the awards to the recipients or their next of kin. While most awards are conferred at this ceremony, the Param Vir Chakra and Ashoka Chakra are presented during the Republic Day Parade.

Selection Process Gallantry Award Winners

Recommendations and Initiation
  • Armed Forces: The process begins when a unit in the Armed Forces initiates a case for a gallantry award. 
    • If the act of gallantry is deemed fit, it is recommended to the respective Services Headquarters. 
    • Commanders in the chain of command play a crucial role in endorsing these recommendations.
  • Civilian Citizens: For civilian citizens, recommendations are solicited by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). 
    • MHA calls for recommendations from State/UT Governments, Central Ministries/Departments, Central Armed Police Forces, Railway Protection Force, etc. 
Scrutiny and Review
  • Armed Forces: By the Awards Committee at Services Headquarters. 
    • These proposals are then forwarded to the Ministry of Defence with the approval of the respective Service Chiefs.
  • Civilian Citizens: By a Sub-Committee within the MHA. 
    • Their recommendations are then sent to the Ministry of Defence with the approval of the Union Home Secretary.
Timing of Recommendations
  • Generally, there should be a time limit of not more than two calendar years from the date of the heroic act.
Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC)
  • All recommendations are reviewed and considered by the Central Honours & Awards Committee (CH&AC). 
  • Composition: The CH&AC comprises the Raksha Mantri (Minister of Defence), the three Service Chiefs, and the Defence Secretary. 
    • For civilian awards, the Home Secretary is also a member of the committee.
Presidential Approval and Announcement
  • Once approved by the President, the gallantry awards are officially announced on the occasions of the Republic Day and Independence Day, recognizing and honoring acts of bravery and sacrifice by individuals from the Armed Forces and civilians.
