Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025 is a festival that is celebrated by the Sikh community in India and all over the world. Guru Nanak Jayanti 2025 will be observed on Wednesday, 5 November 2025. This festival is very auspicious as it marks the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru and a saint teacher. It is one of the holiest festivals celebrated by them. Guru Nanak Dev Birth Anniversary 2025

The Guru Nanak Dev birth anniversary 2025 makes the world remember a great saint who worked to make the people of different religions live in peace and harmony. A large number of people light the Gurudwaras, sing hymns, and serve special dishes to the people in langar on his birth anniversary. The sense of equality and service is at its peak on the holy day. The Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti 2025 event makes millions of his devotees feel a connection to Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his principles of truth, humility, and brotherhood. 

He spread the light of truth, equality, and love for all through his divine presence. He wrote 974 hymns that are now present in the holy Sikh religious book called Guru Granth Sahib. Sikhs from all over the world pay homage to him on this day by conducting prayers, kirtans and langar in Gurudwaras on the day of his Gurpurab.

Guru Nanak Biography

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first Guru of Sikhism and the originator of the Sikh religious order. Born to parents Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta in 1469 at Talwandi village (currently known as Nankana Sahib) in Pakistan, he was recognized as the founder of Sikhism at the age of nine. Guru Nanak questioned ritualistic practices, the caste system, and superstitions from an early age and was noted for his spirituality and rationality.

Birth and Childhood 

Guru Nanak was born in 1469 to parents Mehta Kalu and Mata Tripta at Talwandi village (now called Nankana Sahib) in Pakistan. 

• He was recognized to be the founder of Sikhism at the age of nine. From an early age, Guru Nanak is known to have questioned ritualistic practices, caste, and superstitions, and was admired for his spirituality and rationalism.

Learning and Work 

Guru Nanak was known to be spiritually inclined from an early age, as he was found to be more interested in spiritual discussions and topics. He quickly became learned in Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi, and the holy texts of religions with help from his sister, Bebe Nanki. 

• Nanak is also known to have found work as an accountant at Sultanpur Lodhi, all the while meditating and writing hymns in his spare time.

Spiritual Revelation and Journeys

He gained enlightenment on the banks of Vain Nadi (the dry riverbed) at the age of 30, later uttering the words “There is no Hindu, no Musalman” to mark the unity of mankind and God. He is said to have then travelled across India, South Asia, Tibet, Persia, and Arabia over four major journeys (Udasis), lasting 30 years in total, to share his ideas about the equality of all people, oneness of God, and the need for seva (service).

He was accompanied by his companion Bhai Mardana on his journeys and they together visited temples, mosques, and religious centres all over, speaking out against meaningless rituals, social evils, and superstitions.

Founding of Kartarpur

Guru Nanak established Kartarpur, a spiritual centre, on the banks of the Ravi River in 1522, and continued to preach and work on upholding the practices he had espoused throughout his life. 

• He founded the communal kitchen Langar (free meals for all) to instil the spirit of equality, oneness of God and society. 
• He appointed Bhai Lehna (later Guru Angad Dev Ji) as his successor and died at Kartarpur in 1539. 
• Guru Nanak’s hymns were later collected and added to the Guru Granth Sahib. He is the founder of Sikhism and is worshipped by millions as the one who shaped its tenets.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji Teachings

Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, imparted universal values that included the oneness of God, equality of all human beings, ethical conduct, and selfless service to humanity. Here is a teaching of Guru Nanak Dev Ji: 

• Unity of God: Guru Nanak proclaimed the existence of one formless, eternal God (“Ik Onkar”), who is the creator of all life and accessible to all, regardless of religion or background.
• Equality and Social Justice: He rejected caste, gender, and socio-economic discrimination, asserting that all individuals are equal in the eyes of God. He established practices like the Langar (community kitchen) to uphold these principles.
• The Three Pillars of Sikhism: 
  • Naam Japna (Remembering God): Engage in meditation and remember the name of God as a central spiritual practice.
  • Kirat Karni (Earning an Honest Living): Earn a living through honest, sincere, and ethical means.
  • Vand Chakna (Sharing with Others): Share one’s resources and assist those in need. He emphasized sharing wealth and food so that no one may remain hungry.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji Contribution

Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s life was a message of equality, love, and social unity. His teachings revolved around compassion, fairness, and service to humanity. He vehemently opposed social evils such as caste discrimination and gender inequality, advocating for a life of respect and kindness towards all.

• Social Harmony: Guru Nanak Dev Ji emphasized the fundamental oneness of all humans, “Ek Onkar Satnam.” He taught people to live in harmony, practicing forgiveness and compassion in all their deeds.
• Langar System: He initiated the tradition of Langar (community kitchen), where people of all castes, religions, and social standings sat together to share food, symbolizing unity and equality.
• Sangat and Pangat: Guru Nanak founded the traditions of Sangat (community gathering) and Pangat (eating together) to encourage collective decision-making and dismantle caste barriers.
• Gender Equality: He declared that men and women are equal in the eyes of God and should be treated with equal respect. Guru Nanak Dev Ji spoke against social evils such as female infanticide and the suppression of women.
• Opposition to Inequality: Guru Nanak Dev Ji rejected caste-based discrimination, empty rituals, and false pride vehemently. He believed that true devotion resided in good deeds, honest living, and selfless service to others.
