History of Kisan Diwas

Kisan Diwas was first celebrated in 2001 by the Government of India to honor Chaudhary Charan Singh, who played a pivotal role in shaping agricultural policies and empowering farmers. Chaudhary Charan Singh (1902–1987) was a prominent Indian leader, often regarded as the Champion of Farmers’ Rights. Born in a middle-class peasant family in Noorpur, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, he pursued higher education in science, law, and post-graduation from Agra University. Known for his relentless efforts to improve farmers’ lives, he played a pivotal role in land reforms and rural debt relief in India.

About Chaudhary Charan Singh

  • Early Life & Education:
    • He graduated in science in 1923 and pursued post-graduation in 1925 from Agra University.
    • Trained as a lawyer, he practiced law in Ghaziabad before shifting to Meerut in 1929.
  • Political Career:
    • First elected to the U.P. Legislative Assembly in 1937 from Chhaprauli constituency and continued to represent it across multiple terms (1946, 1952, 1962, and 1967).
    • Served as Parliamentary Secretary under Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, working in Revenue, Medical, Public Health, and Justice departments.
    • Held several ministerial positions in Uttar Pradesh, including Revenue, Agriculture, Home, and Transport departments.
    • As Chief Minister, he introduced the Land Holding Act of 1960, aiming to lower and standardize land ceiling limits.
  • Key Contributions:
    • Architect of land reforms in Uttar Pradesh, ensuring fair distribution of agricultural land.
    • Played a leading role in drafting the Debt Redemption Bill of 1939, which alleviated the financial burden on rural farmers.
    • Known for his efficiency, anti-corruption stance, and administrative rigor.
  • Legacy:
    • A gifted parliamentarian, Charan Singh earned the reputation of a hard taskmaster, deeply committed to reducing inefficiency and nepotism.
    • His dedication to farmers’ welfare earned him the title of “Kisan Leader”, and his birth anniversary is celebrated as Kisan Diwas to honor his contribution to Indian agriculture and rural development.
