  • Characteristics of Water Bodies: Enclosed water bodies, like fjords or the Black Sea, with shallow sills at their entrances, tend to trap water for extended periods. This limited circulation can result in decreased oxygen levels, contributing to the formation of dead zones.
    • Additionally, regions such as the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and northern Indian Ocean exhibit lower oxygen concentrations, primarily due to minimal circulation that fails to adequately replace consumed oxygen. These regions are identified as oxygen minimum zones (OMZ).
  • Shifting of Wind Patterns: Changes in wind patterns impact coastal water circulation, potentially leading to stagnant water masses and reduced oxygen replenishment, worsening dead zone formation.  
  • Shifting of Water Patterns: Changes in oceanic currents and circulation patterns can significantly impact the distribution and intensity of dead zones by altering nutrient transport and oxygen levels. For example, in the St. Lawrence Estuary, the once prevalent cold, oxygen-rich waters originating from northern Canada are diminishing, has been gradually replaced by warmer, oxygen-deficient waters from the central North Atlantic.
  • Rising Sea Temperatures: Elevated water temperatures reduce the water’s oxygen-holding capacity, making marine environments more susceptible to hypoxia and contributing to dead zone proliferation. As an example, research revealed that 94% of dead zones are located in areas expected to undergo a temperature rise of at least 2°C by the close of this century.
  • Climate Change: Climate change exacerbates one or more of the discussed factors, thereby contributing to the proliferation of dead zones.
