Introduction

The Quit India Movement was a leaderless movement led by people based on the Quit India Resolution passed on August 8, 1942, at the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) meeting at Gowalia tank. It aimed to demand the immediate withdrawal of British colonial rule from India.

  • Failure of the Cripps Mission: The proposed plan fell short of providing full independence, leading to disillusionment among Indian leaders and the masses.
  • Dissatisfaction with British wartime policies: Due to the imposition of heavy taxes and the diversion of resources from India to support the war effort elsewhere.
  • Economic hardships and food scarcity: Indians faced severe economic hardships during World War II, including food shortages and soaring inflation. Example- Bengal Famine of 1942-43.
  • Influence of global anti-colonial movements: The rising tide of anti-colonial movements across the world, such as in Southeast Asia and Africa, inspired Indian nationalists to intensify their struggle for independence.
  • Growing demand for mass struggle: Frustration with British policies led to the emergence of more radical elements within the freedom movement, advocating for direct action and armed resistance.
  • Scorched earth policy: There was fear that Britain may follow Scorched earth policy in Assam, Bengal, Orissa against possible Japanese advance.
  • Fear of Japanese Invasion: Japan, which was part of the Axis Powers that were opposed to the British in the war, were gaining onto the north-eastern frontiers of India. leaders like Gandhiji believed that if the British left India, Japan would not have enough reason to invade India.

Footprints outlined by this movement which ascended the efforts for India’s freedom struggle:

  • Mass Mobilization: Millions of Indians actively participated in protests, strikes, and civil disobedience. For example, widespread demonstrations and acts of defiance were witnessed in major cities like Bombay and Calcutta.
  • International Attention: The movement evoked sympathy and support from various international quarters, putting pressure on the British Raj and contributing to the eventual granting of independence. Example- President Franklin D. Roosevelt pressured Prime Minister Winston Churchill to give in to some of the Indian demands.
  • Path to Independence: It demonstrated the strength and resilience of the Indian people, compelling the British to seriously consider granting independence.
  • Formation of Future Leaders: Prominent figures like Jaiprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohiya, and others emerged as influential leaders during this period, shaping India’s political landscape in the post-independence era.
  • Post-Independence Policies: It emphasized the need for a democratic and inclusive society, where the principles of social justice, equality, and economic development would be prioritized.
