The recent Karnataka Platform-based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2024, has brought the issue to the forefront. However, this growth also highlights several challenges, particularly the absence of a proper regulatory framework.

Reasons for Rapid Growth of the Gig Economy:

  • Changing Workforce Preferences: The younger generation prefers diverse work experiences and values work-life balance, which the gig economy readily offers.
    For example: Freelancers on platforms like Fiverr and Upwork pursue varied projects, aligning with their desire for flexible and diverse work experiences.

Present Challenges in the Gig Economy:

    For instance: The lack of clear policies often leaves gig workers in a vulnerable position, without formal legal protection or standardised benefits.
  • Lack of Job Security: Gig workers face a lack of job security and stability, as their income is dependent on the availability of gigs.
    For instance: Freelancers on platforms like Upwork often experience fluctuating income, creating challenges in budgeting and long-term financial planning.
