Introduction      

The 18th G20 Summit was held in New Delhi, India on September 9-10, 2023, under the theme “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family). It was the first time India hosted the G20 Leaders’ Summit and led to the adoption of the Delhi Declaration . It was attended by leaders from the world’s 20 largest economies, as well as representatives from the UN and the World Bank.

  • African Union’s Inclusion: In a landmark decision that strengthens global representation, the African Union (AU) was inducted as a permanent G20 member. It not only amplifies Africa’s voice in global economic affairs but also reinforces the G20’s intent to be more inclusive.
  • Global Biofuel Alliance: It is a G20 Initiative to develop an alliance of Governments, International organizations and Industry to facilitate the adoption of biofuels.   • Consensus Building: India demonstrated its diplomatic prowess by playing a central role in building consensus among the G20 countries. E.g.: India’s take on the Ukraine war at the G20 summit was to call for peace. The Delhi Declaration stated, “Today’s era must not be of war”. 
  • Championing Inclusivity: India’s strong advocacy for the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 was a significant achievement. It would make the G20 more representative of the global community and would help to ensure that the forum’s reflect the interests of all countries.
