Introduction:

Compassion is understanding or empathy for the suffering of others. Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation for those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality etc. are different from one’s own. These two qualities are very important for a civil servant in a multicultural country like ours.

The attribute of being compassionate is of immense value:

  • Understand the needs of marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.
    • Harsh Mander, through the Centre for Equity Studies, advocates for homeless people’s rights.
  • Unbiased approach in service delivery and distribution of government facilities.

  • Upholding Natural Rights: Tolerant civil servants uphold principles of human rights, democracy, multiculturalism, and pluralism, ensuring fairness and inclusivity in executing social schemes.
  • Leading by Example: Civil servants promoting tolerance inspire community-led celebrations of festivals among various religions, encouraging acceptance and inclusiveness.

India is a multicultural society with high numbers of vulnerable, Disadvantaged and weaker sections. So efficient delivery of services and addressing their concerns is very important. So It is these two traits which will be of immense value for a civil servant in his day to day public service.
