This day honours the historical and political journey of the state from a Union Territory to full-fledged statehood. Mizoram Foundation Day 2025 will be celebrated with magnificence, featuring cultural performances, traditional dances, and government-led initiatives.
As part of the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ initiative, Mizoram Governor Gen (Dr) VK Singh, PVSM, AVSM, and YSM (Retd) will lead the Mizoram Foundation Day 2025 celebrations. The Governor emphasized the state’s transformation from insurgency to one of the most peaceful states in India.

Mizoram’s journey to statehood began long before February 20, 1987. Initially, it was part of Assam as the Lushai Hills District. In 1972, it became a Union Territory under the Northeast Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. However, demands for greater autonomy and peace led to the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986 between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front (MNF). This initiative led to Mizoram’s statehood under the 53rd Amendment to the Constitution.
Thus, Mizoram was officially declared the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987.

Mizoram, geographically located in the northeastern region of India, is known for its spectacular landscapes, vibrant culture, and high literacy rate. It is bordered by Myanmar and Bangladesh, making it strategically significant.
Mizoram’s rolling hills, dense forests, and rich biodiversity make it one of the greenest states in India. The Mizo people are known for their unique traditions, music, and dance forms like Cheraw (Bamboo Dance).

Mizoram has a 91.58% literacy rate, which makes it one of the most educated states in India. Institutions like Mizoram University (MZU) and Pachhunga University College have contributed significantly to higher education.

Mizoram shares its Statehood Day with Arunachal Pradesh, which became the 24th state of India on the same day in 1987. Originally known as the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), Arunachal Pradesh was a Union Territory until it was granted statehood under the State of Arunachal Pradesh Act, 1986.
Both states are border states with significant geopolitical importance. While Mizoram shares its borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, Arunachal Pradesh borders China, Bhutan, and Tibet.
