When was Mizoram Founded?

Mizoram’s journey to statehood began long before February 20, 1987. Initially, it was part of Assam as the Lushai Hills District. In 1972, it became a Union Territory under the Northeast Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. However, demands for greater autonomy and peace led to the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986 between the Government of India and the Mizo National Front (MNF). This initiative led to Mizoram’s statehood under the 53rd Amendment to the Constitution.

Thus, Mizoram was officially declared the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987.

Historical Background of Mizoram Statehood

Pre-Independence Period

  • Lushai Hills was part of Assam under British rule.

  • 1961: Mizo National Front (MNF) was formed to demand a separate Mizo state.
  • 1966: MNF launched an armed insurgency against the Indian government.
  • 1972: Mizoram was granted Union Territory status.
