National Flag Day is observed and remembered as a historical day as on this day, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian National Flag on July 22, 1947. This day presents a tribute to the tricolour, which symbolizes India’s struggle for independence and its commitment to justice, liberty, and equality. Our Indian flag has three horizontal stripes of saffron, white, and green, and the Ashoka Chakra at the centre, represents the values and aspirations of the country.

In the national flag of India, the top band is of Saffron colour, indicating the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The last band is green in colour showing the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
This Dharma Chakra depicted the “wheel of the law” in the Sarnath Lion Capital made by the 3rd-century BC Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. The chakra intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation.
A notable moment in the history of the Indian National Flag is when Bhikaiji Rustom Cama, who was the first woman to hoist the National Flag in a foreign land on 22 August 1907. She has also toured the US and presented her speech on, ‘the ill effects of British rule, and urged Americans to support the cause of India’s freedom’.
