National Flag Day: National Flag Day is a significant event for citizens of India, as this day is solely dedicated to honouring the adoption of our nation’s pride, “The Indian National Flag”. This day comes with a special place in the hearts of Indians as our national flag is a symbol of unity, pride, and freedom of the nation. To celebrate and remember National Flag Day 2024, many activities and events will reflect the rich history and significance of the Indian flag.
National Flag Day is observed and remembered as a historical day as on this day, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Indian National Flag on July 22, 1947. This day presents a tribute to the tricolour, which symbolizes India’s struggle for independence and its commitment to justice, liberty, and equality. Our Indian flag has three horizontal stripes of saffron, white, and green, and the Ashoka Chakra at the centre, represents the values and aspirations of the country.
National Flag Day 2024 will be celebrated on July 22 of every year, across the nation with great zeal and spirit. Many educational institutions, government offices, and community organizations will take the initiative and will organize many events and ceremonies like ‘Flag-Hosting’, ‘Cultural Events’ and ‘Educational Activities’ to raise awareness about the significance of the Indian flag.

Indian National Flag Adoption Day is a significant historical event for the National Flag Day, as this is a day that marks the calendar when the tricolour was adopted as the National Flag officially. The Indian National Flag was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947. For this esteemed day, countless freedom fighters sacrificed their lives, this day is a reminder of such sacrifices who fought for the nation’s independence and the values represented by the flag. The step of adopting the national flag was crucial in the journey of forming India as an administered nation.
The National Flag is a horizontal tricolour of India saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and India green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of the width of the flag to its length is two to three. In the centre of the white band is a navy-blue wheel with 24 equally spaced spokes which represents the Ashoka Chakra.
In the national flag of India, the top band is of Saffron colour, indicating the strength and courage of the country. The white middle band indicates peace and truth with Dharma Chakra. The last band is green in colour showing the fertility, growth and auspiciousness of the land.
This Dharma Chakra depicted the “wheel of the law” in the Sarnath Lion Capital made by the 3rd-century BC Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. The chakra intends to show that there is life in movement and death in stagnation.
A notable moment in the history of the Indian National Flag is when Bhikaiji Rustom Cama, who was the first woman to hoist the National Flag in a foreign land on 22 August 1907. She has also toured the US and presented her speech on, ‘the ill effects of British rule, and urged Americans to support the cause of India’s freedom’. Her notable achievements show the testament to progress and empower the women of India. On National Flag Day 2024, that milestone are duly remembered and celebrated to inspire future generations.
On Republic Day, the President of India traditionally unfurls the national flag at Rajpath, New Delhi. This ceremony is a significant part of the Republic Day celebrations, showcasing the country’s military strength and cultural heritage. As National Flag Day 2024 is coming onward, the preparation for the Republic Day ceremony is in full swing, highlighting the importance of the flag in the nation’s grand celebrations.
