National Space Day 2025: India Marks Second Space Day with Focus on Human Spaceflight

India is celebrating its second National Space Day on August 23, 2025 (Saturday), honouring the country’s remarkable journey from its early rocket launches in the 1960s to its upcoming human spaceflight under the Gaganyaan mission.

The day commemorates the historic achievement of Chandrayaan-3’s soft landing on the Moon on August 23, 2023, which made India the first country to land near the Moon’s southern polar region. The site was named ‘Shiv Shakti Point’, and the successful deployment of the Pragyan Rover added another milestone to India’s lunar exploration story.

Why National Space Day is Celebrated

The Government of India officially declared August 23rd as National Space Day in 2023 to inspire future generations and honour India’s growing role in global space exploration. The objectives are:

  • To recognize India’s significant achievements in space science and technology.
  • To generate curiosity among students and inspire them to take up careers in space research.
  • To spread awareness of the benefits of space applications in daily life, from weather forecasting to agriculture and disaster management.
  • To promote national pride and unity by showcasing India’s leadership in the space sector.

National Space Day 2025 Theme

The theme for National Space Day 2025 (NSpD-2025) is:
“Bridging the Past and Future: Honoring Traditional Astronomy and Showcasing Modern Space Achievements.”

This year’s celebrations highlight both India’s ancient wisdom in astronomy and its modern achievements, especially in human spaceflight and global collaborations.

Students are at the heart of the celebrations with science fairs, planetarium shows, competitions, and interactive sessions with ISRO scientists across schools and colleges.

India’s Progress in the Space Sector

India’s Progress in the Space Sector Are;

Expanding Private Participation

Since the government opened the space sector to private players in 2020 by establishing IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre), the sector has witnessed rapid growth.

  • Over 300 start-ups have registered in recent years.
  • IN-SPACe supported two sub-orbital test flights by Indian start-ups.
  • Six private entities have successfully launched 14 satellites with ISRO’s support.

Human Spaceflight – Gaganyaan Mission

The upcoming Gaganyaan programme is the centrepiece of this year’s Space Day.

  • ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan confirmed that the first uncrewed mission under Gaganyaan is scheduled for December 2025.
  • The mission will carry Vyommitra, a half-humanoid robot, to test human spaceflight systems.
  • IAF Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently became the first Indian astronaut to complete a mission to the International Space Station, is shortlisted for the future crewed Gaganyaan mission.

Other Recent Achievements

  • The NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite, launched earlier this year, is functioning normally.
  • India continues to strengthen its role in global space cooperation while expanding citizen-centric applications of space technology.

National Space Meet 2.0

As part of the celebrations, ISRO hosted the National Space Meet 2.0 in New Delhi on August 22. The event brought together Ministries, start-ups, academia, and experts to shape India’s space roadmap for the next decade.

  • Ten breakout sessions identified hundreds of use cases for immediate and future implementation.
  • Principal Secretary to the PM, P.K. Mishra, emphasized that India’s space journey is about improving life on Earth, from agriculture to climate resilience.
  • The number of space start-ups in India has grown from just 2 in 2014 to more than 350 today, showcasing the success of reforms.

Nationwide Celebrations

The Department of Space has planned events across the country to engage the public, especially the youth. Highlights include:

  • Exhibitions and educational outreach programmes led by the Ministries of Science & Technology and Culture.
  • Citizen-centric showcases of space applications like SVAMITVA land-mapping, disaster early warnings, telecommunication in remote areas, and precision farming.
  • Celebrations at Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) campuses in Ahmedabad, Udaipur, and Mount Abu.

India’s Space Journey From Aryabhata to Gaganyaan

ISRO Chairman Narayanan reflected on India’s progress from launching sounding rockets at Thumba in 1963 to achieving global recognition today. He underlined that deeper private sector integration and capability expansion will significantly contribute to Viksit Bharat 2047.

National Space Day 2025 is thus not only a celebration of India’s past achievements but also a vision for the future — from ancient astronomy to modern human spaceflight.
