National Statistics Day 2024: In recognition of the notable contributions made by Professor (late) Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the fields of statistics and economic planning, Government of India has designated June 29 every year, coinciding with his birth anniversary, as “Statistics Day” in the category of Special Days to be celebrated at the national level.
National Statistics Day 2024: Annually on June 29th, India honors the contributions of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the father of Indian statistics. This day is celebrated as National Statistics Day. The main objective of celebrating Statistics Day is creation of public awareness, especially among the younger generation, on the role and importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation for development of the country. In 2024, the celebration takes on special significance with a dedicated theme reflecting current statistical needs and innovations.
National Statistics Day was first celebrated in 2007, and it coincides with the birth anniversary of PC Mahalanobis, who made significant contributions to the field of statistics in India. The day is marked by various activities, including seminars, workshops, and competitions, to promote the use of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.
National Statistics Day is celebrated to acknowledge the crucial role of statistics in our lives and honor PC Mahalanobis’ contributions. It serves as a reminder of the importance of data in decision-making processes and encourages the development of statistical literacy among the population.
Since 2007, Statistics Day is celebrated every year with a theme of contemporary national importance. The theme for Statistics Day 2024 is “Use of data for decision-making”. The concept of data driven decision making is important for making informed decisions in any field and it is one of the pre-requisites for better understanding of statistical information emanating from official statistics and for facilitating evidence-based decision making.
The main event of Statistics Day 2024 is being organized at Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, and New Delhi.
Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, born on June 29, 1893, in Kolkata. He was a visionary statistician whose work laid the foundation for modern statistical science in India. He is best known for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure used in various scientific disciplines.
PC Mahalanobis studied at the Brahmo Boys School in Kolkata and later attended the Presidency College, where he excelled in physics. He then moved to the University of Cambridge to study mathematics and physics, where his interest in statistics was sparked by his interactions with prominent statisticians.
PC Mahalanobis founded the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in 1931, which became a premier institution for research and training in statistics. His work in sampling methods revolutionized data collection processes in India, particularly in agriculture and population studies.
PC Mahalanobis played a crucial role in the formulation of India’s Five-Year Plans, particularly the Second Five-Year Plan, which emphasized industrialization. His statistical methodologies provided a scientific basis for economic planning and policy-making in India.
PC Mahalanobis Biography is often referred to as the father of Indian statistics due to his pioneering work in the field. His contributions have had a lasting impact on statistical practices and have positioned India as a leader in the field of statistics.
