Beyond the primary cultivation of crops, agriculture encompasses a spectrum of supplementary activities that contribute significantly to the overall agrarian landscape. These ancillary endeavors, often referred to as allied activities, play a crucial role in enhancing the sustainability, productivity, and economic viability of agricultural practices. 

This article delves into the diverse realms of allied activities in agriculture, highlighting their multifaceted contributions to rural economies and the holistic development of farming communities.

  • Meaning: It refers to  the management and breeding of cattle for the primary purpose of obtaining milk and dairy products.
  • Capital and Labor Intensity in Dairy Farming: Dairy farming, one of the most important allied activities, is highly capital and labor-intensive, focusing on milch animal rearing. 
    • It involves significant investments in animal sheds, fodder storage, feeding, milking machinery, and veterinary care.(Refer figure)

  • Year-round Operations and Strategic Location: It operates year-round, unlike crop cultivation, and is typically located near urban and industrial areas for easy access to local markets.
  • Enhancing Dairy Product Shelf Life: Advances in transportation, refrigeration, pasteurization, and preservation methods have extended the shelf life of dairy products.
    • These advancements play a pivotal role in sustaining a reliable and safe supply of dairy products to meet the demands of an ever-expanding global market. 
  • Global Hubs of Commercial Dairy Farming: Commercial dairy farming is prominent in three main regions: 
    • North Western Europe, Canada, and South Eastern Australia, including New Zealand and Tasmania (Refer figure).

Mediterranean Agriculture and its Allied Harvest

  • Mediterranean agriculture is highly specialized commercial farming.
  • Cultivating in the Mild Climes: It is practiced in countries around the Mediterranean Sea in Europe and North Africa, extending from Tunisia to the Atlantic Coast.
    • It’s also found in southern California, central Chile, southwestern South Africa, and parts of Australia. 
  • Citrus Fruits and Viticulture: This region is known for producing citrus fruits and excels in viticulture or grape cultivation, producing high-quality grapes for some of the world’s finest wines with unique flavors. 
  • Diversifying Yields: Additionally, inferior grapes are dried to make raisins and currants.
    • Olives and fig are also produced in this region.
  • Meeting Winter Demand in Market:  One of its advantages is that production of valuable crops like fruits and vegetables during the winter, when there is s high demand in European and North American markets.

Cultivating Riches: Market Gardening, Horticulture, and Allied Pursuits

  • Market gardening and horticulture specialist in the cultivation of high value crops such vegetables, fruits and flowers, solely for the urban markets.
  • Definition: Horticulture is defined as the art and science of growing fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts and ornamental plants.
  • Major Fruit and Vegetable Production Centers: India is a major producer. 
    • It produces tropical and temperate fruits like mangoes of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, 
    • Oranges of Nagpur and Cherrapunjee (Meghalaya),  pineapples of Meghalaya, Bananas of Kerala, Mizoram, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu,
    • Lichi and Guava of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, 
    • Grapes of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra, 
    • Apples, pears, apricots and walnuts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. 
    • Additionally, India grows various vegetables (Refer figure).
  • India’s Horticulture Prowess: In 2018, India was the second-largest producer of fruits and vegetables globally, showcasing the diversity and importance of agriculture in the country.
  • Essential Factors for Horticulture: It requires availability of labor and capital, irrigation, HYV seeds, fertilizers, insecticides, greenhouses, and also requires heating in colder regions.

  • Horticulture Hotspots: Prominent in densely populated industrial areas of NW Europe, NE USA, and the Mediterranean.
    • Example:  The Netherlands excels in tulip cultivation for European markets. 
  • Truck farming: The regions where farmers specialise in vegetables only, the farming is know as truck farming.
    • It refers to a type of commercial horticulture or vegetable farming where crops are cultivated for sale directly to consumers, restaurants, or local markets. 
    • The distance of truck farms from the market is governed by the distance that a truck can cover overnight, hence the name truck farming.
  • Factory Farming: In addition to market gardening, the industrial regions of western Europe and North America, factory farming is practiced with careful livestock rearing, breed selection, and scientific breeding
    • It  involves significant capital investment in facilities, machinery, veterinary services, and lighting.
    • This holistic approach to agriculture integrates market gardening, horticulture, and allied activities, contributing to the overall richness and diversity of agricultural landscapes.
