Forest: Balancing Biodiversity, Water and Soil health

December 19, 2023 274 0

Trees, Plants, and Animals in the Forest:

Forests serve as green lungs and water purifying systems in nature. There are several trees, shrubs, herbs and grasses present. The floor and the trees are covered with different types of creepers and climbers.

How do trees in a Forest structure their Layers, Canopy, and contribute to a rich array of natural products?

  • Layers and Anatomy of Trees in Nature: In a forest, trees form the uppermost layer, followed by shrubs.
    • The herbs form the lowest layer of vegetation.
    • Branchy part of a tree above the stem is known as the crown of the tree.
  • Canopy: Protective Roof: The branches of the tall trees look like a roof over the other plants.
    • These are called a canopy.
  • Rich array of Natural Products: Gum, Honey, Sealing wax, oils, spices, fodder for animals and medicinal plants are also some of the products which get from there.

Interconnected Roles of Plants, Soil, and Decomposers in Forest Nutrient Cycling:

  • Nature’s Interconnected Web: There is Interrelationship of plant, soil and decomposers.
  • Importance of Humus in Soil Health and Plant Growth:  Humus is the dark organic matter in soil that is formed by the decomposition of plant and animal matter.
    • It is rich in nutrients and retains moisture in the soil.
    • Humus is essential for plant growth and soil health.
  • Role of Decomposers in transforming Organic Matter to Humus: The micro-organisms which convert the dead plants and animals to humus are known as decomposers.
  • The presence of humus ensures that the nutrients of the dead plants and animals are released into the soil.
    • From there, these nutrients are again absorbed by the roots of the living plants.

Roles of Forests in India’s Environmental Landscape:

      Do You Know?

  • India’s forest cover has increased from 19.53% in the 1980s to 21.71% in 2021, and its total green cover, including tree cover, now stands at 24.62%.
  • India State of Forests Reports(ISFR): It is biennial report released by Forest Survey of India (Under MoEFCC)
  • Providing Food and Habitat for Wildlife: By harboring a greater variety of plants, they provide greater opportunities for food and habitat for the herbivores.
  •  Impact on Food Chains and Carnivore Populations: Larger number of herbivores means increased availability of food for a variety of carnivores.
  • Role of Animal Diversity in Sustainability:  The wide variety of animals helps in regeneration and growth.
  • Nurturing through Essential Nutrient Supply: Decomposers help in maintaining the supply of nutrients to the growing plants.

Forests as Natural Defenders Against Soil Erosion and Flooding:

  • Trees in Mitigating Flooding and Ground Impact: When there are no trees in an area, rainfall directly impacts the ground, potentially leading to flooding in the surrounding area.
  • Tree Bindings Safeguard Against Soil Erosion and Erosion: Tree roots serve to bind the soil, but in their absence, the soil is susceptible to being washed away or eroded.
  • Interplay between soil support, growth and water table sustainability: Soil plays a vital role in supporting the growth and renewal.
    • Moreover, they serve as natural sponges for rainwater, allowing it to gradually permeate the ground.
    • This process aids in sustaining the water table consistently throughout the year.
  • Forests’ Dual Role in Flood Mitigation and Water Flow Regulation: They serve a dual purpose by not only mitigating floods but also regulating the flow of water in streams, ensuring a continuous and reliable water supply.
