Introduction of Water Conservation – Over exploitation and mismanagement

Over exploitation and mismanagement of water resources will impoverish this resource and cause ecological crises that may have profound impact on our lives.

Water conservation is the practice of using water more efficiently and responsibly to ensure its sustainable availability for current and future generations. It is a critical aspect of environmental stewardship, given that water is a finite resource and essential for various human activities, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems

Some steps can be taken to Water conservation: Safeguarding Our Water Resources

  • Water Conservation Strategies: Preventing Deterioration of Water Quality-
    • Water Quality: It refers to purity of water, or water without unwanted foreign substances.

India’s rivers, especially the smaller ones, have all turned into toxic streams. And even the big ones like the Ganga and Yamuna are far from being pure. The assault on India’s rivers – from population growth, agricultural modernisation, urbanisation and industrialisation – is enormous and growing by the day….. This entire life stands threatened.

  • Water Conservation Against Contamination Hazards:  Discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage, agricultural chemicals and industrial effluents in water bodies contaminates water with nitrates, metals and pesticides thus, making it hazardous for human use.
      • This results in pollution of water whereby quality of water deteriorates affecting aquatic systems. Sometimes, they also seep down and pollute groundwater.

    • Water Conservation through Responsible Discharge: Water pollution can be controlled by treating these effluents suitably before releasing them in water bodies.

Water Conservation for Pollution Prevention: Understanding Water Quality Dynamics in Rivers

  • Water Quality Dynamics: The major rivers of the country generally retain better water quality in less densely populated upper stretches in hilly areas.
    • In plains, drains carrying agricultural (fertilizers and insecticides), domestic (solid and liquid wastes), and industrial effluents join the rivers.
    • The concentration of pollutants in rivers, especially remains very high during the summer season when flow of water is low.
  • The Role of State Central Pollution Control Board in Water Conservation: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with State Pollution Control Boards has been monitoring water quality of national aquatic resources.
    • The data obtained from these show that organic and bacterial contamination continues to be the main source of pollution in rivers.
    • The Yamuna river is the most polluted river in the country between Delhi and Etawah.
    • Other severely polluted rivers are: the Sabarmati at Ahmedabad, the Gomti at Lucknow, the Kali, the Adyar, the Cooum (entire stretches), the Vaigai at Madurai and the Music of Hyderabad and the Ganga at Kanpur and Varanasi.
  • The Legislative Provisions: Such as the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974, and Environment Protection Act 1986 should be implemented effectively.
  • The Water Cess Act, 1977: It meant to reduce pollution has also made marginal impacts.
  • Urgency of Public Awareness: There is a strong need to generate public awareness about the importance of water and impacts of water pollution.
  • Ecosystem Services of Forests: Forest and other vegetation cover slows the surface runoff and replenishes underground water. Therefore, promoting afforestation is a holistic approach to addressing water-related challenges.
  • Optimizing Irrigation Efficiency: The canals used for irrigating fields should be properly lined to minimize losses by water seepage. Sprinklers should be used.
    • In dry regions with high rates of evaporation, drip or trickle irrigation is very useful.
  • Strategic Water Solutions for India: Coastal areas, especially those facing water scarcity, can benefit from desalination plants to supplement freshwater resources.
    • Transfer of water from water surplus areas to water deficit areas through inter linking of rivers can be important remedies for solving water problems in India.
  • Water Conservation through Recycle and Reuse:  Use of water of lesser quality such as reclaimed waste-water would be an attractive option for industries for cooling and fire fighting to reduce their water cost.
  • Similarly, in urban areas water after bathing, washing utensils and washing vehicles can be used for gardening.
  • This contributes to Water Conservation by preserving better quality of water for drinking purposes. There is enormous scope for replenishing water through recycling.

Conclusion

In conclusion, embracing Water Conservation practices is crucial for safeguarding our precious water resources. By preventing pollution, treating effluents responsibly, and promoting the recycle and reuse of water, we can contribute to a sustainable and healthier water ecosystem. Let us collectively strive for Water Conservation to preserve this invaluable resource and secure a sustainable future for all.
