The red colour is caused by iron-rich hypersaline water emerging from beneath the glacier; iron oxidises upon contact with oxygen. Indicates the existence of ancient subglacial brine ecosystems surviving without sunlight. Provides insights into extremophile life, glaciology, climate history and the possibility of life on icy planets and moons.
