The 100-year Glacier mystery: Scientists finally crack secret behind Antarctica’s Blood Falls (GS-1:  Geography) Indian Express
  • Blood Falls is located on Taylor Glacier in East Antarctica’s McMurdo Dry Valleys. 
  • The red colour is caused by iron-rich hypersaline water emerging from beneath the glacier; iron oxidises upon contact with oxygen.
  • Indicates the existence of ancient subglacial brine ecosystems surviving without sunlight. 
  • Provides insights into extremophile life, glaciology, climate history and the possibility of life on icy planets and moons.
Kostiantynivka

  • Located near the frontline of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.

Rules governing crèches in India 

(GS-2: Polity & Governance)

The Hindu
  • Crèches are governed under the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017, requiring establishments with 50 or more employees to provide crèche facilities. 
  • The National Minimum Guidelines for Setting up and Running Crèches (2024) prescribe standards on infrastructure, nutrition, staffing, safety and child care.
  • Crèche services are also provided under Palna Scheme (Mission Shakti).
  • Supports women’s labour force participation and early childhood care.
Right to a fair trial at the crossroads

  • Right to a fair trial is part of Article 21 (Right to Life and Personal Liberty).
  • Includes presumption of innocence, legal aid, speedy trial, impartial judiciary, reasoned judgment and open court proceedings.
  • Reinforced through Articles 20, 22, 39A and judicial precedents. 
  • Essential component of rule of law and criminal justice reforms.

  • Externment refers to removal of a person from a specified area to prevent anticipated criminal activities.
  • Governed by provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951 (similar laws exist in several States).
  • The court held that peaceful participation in protests cannot by itself justify externment.
  • Reinforces constitutional freedoms under Article 19(1)(a), 19(1)(b) and 19(1)(c) subject to reasonable restrictions.
Indus Waters Treaty

  • Signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan with the World Bank as a facilitator.
  • Allocates Eastern Rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej) to India and Western Rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) primarily to Pakistan with specified Indian uses.
  • Established the Permanent Indus Commission for dispute resolution.
  • Frequently in news due to India-Pakistan relations and hydroelectric projects.

  • United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) is one of the Unified Combatant Commands of the U.S. military.
  • Established in 2007 and became operational in 2008.
  • Headquarters located in Stuttgart, Germany.
  • Coordinates U.S. military engagement, counter-terrorism, security cooperation and humanitarian assistance across most African countries.

AIR
  • Located at Pachpadra (Balotra district), Rajasthan. • Developed by HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Ltd. (HRRL), a joint venture of HPCL and the Government of Rajasthan.
  • India’s first greenfield integrated refinery-petrochemical complex.
  • Enhances domestic refining capacity, petrochemical production, employment generation and energy security.
Pashujanya Yudh Abhyas (PYA) 

(GS-3:Economy)

  • PYA is a nationwide animal disease preparedness and emergency response exercise conducted by the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying.
  • Tests coordination among veterinary institutions, laboratories and State governments.
  • Strengthens preparedness against diseases such as Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and Avian Influenza.
  • Supports livestock health, biosecurity and food security.
Scientists accurately date Bihar’s Munger banyan at around 700 years

Nameri Tiger Reserve

  • Located in Sonitpur district of Assam along the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas.
  • River Jia Bhoroli (Kameng) flows through the reserve. 
  • It forms a contiguous landscape with Pakke Tiger Reserve (Arunachal Pradesh).
  • Home to Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, clouded leopard, hornbills and rich bird diversity. 
  • Part of the Eastern Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot.
Radio telemetry 

(GS-3: Environment)

The Hindu
  • Radio telemetry is a wildlife monitoring technique in which animals fitted with radio transmitters are tracked using receivers.
  • Helps study animal movement, habitat use, migration, breeding behaviour and mortality.
  • Widely used for conservation of tigers, elephants, vultures and other endangered species. 
  • Supports evidence-based wildlife management.
