First Nobel Prize in Chemistry

In 1901, the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry was given to a Dutch chemist Jacobus Henricus van Hoff. He was awarded on his pioneer work on the dynamics of chemical and osmotic pressure of solutions.

It is through his discoveries that scientists were able to know how chemical reactions take place and the way substances interact on a molecular scale. The work by van ’t Hoff formed the basis of contemporary physical chemistry that then spawned a tradition of honoring outstanding work in science by awarding the Nobel Prize.

Who Got First Nobel Prize in Chemistry in India

The first person of Indian origin to receive the Nobel Prize in Chemistry was Venkatraman Ramakrishnan in 2009. He shared the award with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath for their groundbreaking work on the structure and function of the ribosome a vital part of the cell that produces proteins. 

Ramakrishnan achievement brought international recognition to Indian scientists in the field of chemistry and highlighted the significant contributions of researchers of Indian origin to global science.
