  • Murlikant Petkar (1972): India’s first Paralympic gold medalist in swimming, marking the beginning of India’s Paralympic journey.
  • Devendra Jhajharia (2004 & 2016): The first Indian Paralympian to win two gold medals in the Javelin Throw across two different Paralympic Games.
  • Deepa Malik (2016): Became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic medal, earning silver in the shot put.

Who is Murlikant Petkar?

Murlikant Petkar’s gold in 1972 also stands as India’s first Paralympic gold medal. His achievement laid the foundation for future athletes to follow in his footsteps and bring glory to the nation. He was a former soldier in the Indian Army. He was injured during the 1965 India-Pakistan war, which led him to take up sports as part of his rehabilitation.
