Mob violence, marked by uncontrolled public disorder and chaos, is indeed emerging as a significant law and order challenge in India. Instances like the Dadri lynching (2015) or the Alwar violence (2017) underscore the scale of this issue.

Causes:

  • Communal Tensions: Many mob violence incidents have roots in religious and caste conflicts, often stoked by misinformation and divisive politics. For example, 2017 Alwar lynching in Rajasthan, where suspicion of cow smuggling, driven by religious sentiments, led to a fatal mob attack on a dairy farmer.
  • Social Media Misinformation: The spread of rumors and fake news through social media platforms can incite people and lead to mob violence. For example, 2018 WhatsApp lynchings in India, where baseless rumors of child kidnapping triggered several deadly mob violence incidents.
  • Weak Law Enforcement: Sometimes, the inability or reluctance of law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and decisively allows such situations to escalate. For example, the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots in Uttar Pradesh.
