Q. Write a note on India’s green energy corridor to alleviate the problem of conventional energy. (200 words, 10 marks)

Answer:

Approach:

  • Introduction: Give a brief idea about the green energy corridor
  • Body: Mention how India’s Green Energy Corridor project could alleviate problems associated with conventional energy
  • Conclusion: India’s green energy corridor is a significant initiative to promote renewable energy and create a sustainable future.

Introduction:

India’s green energy corridor (GEC) is an ambitious plan aimed at integrating renewable energy into the country’s power grid and reducing the dependence on conventional sources of energy. The project involves building a network of high-voltage transmission lines to transport electricity generated from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, from the states where they are abundant to the areas that require them. Recently, phase 2 of the GEC has been initiated.

The green energy corridor project is being implemented by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) with the support of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and other government agencies.

Body:

India’s Green Energy Corridor project could alleviate problems associated with conventional energy in following ways:

  • Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels: The Green Energy Corridor project could help reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels and make its energy supply more stable and cost efficient. In addition, the project will help India meet its climate change commitments under the Paris Agreement.
  • Improved Energy Security: India imports a large amount of its oil and gas, which can make it vulnerable to supply disruptions and price spikes. By developing a domestic renewable energy sector, India could improve its energy security and reduce its reliance on imported energy.
  • India has set a target of achieving 450 GW installed Renewable Energy capacity by 2030 as part of its nationally determined contributions. To achieve this target, the renewable energy problem of intermittency and variability must be solved.
  • One way to do this is by creating a robust transmission and storage infrastructure that can transport renewable energy from the areas where it is generated to the areas where it is consumed and improve the reliability and stability of the grid.
  • Reduced Pollution: Conventional sources of energy like coal, oil and natural gas release a lot of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, leading to air pollution, acid rain and climate change. The Green Energy Corridor could help reduce pollution and mitigate the negative impacts of climate change.
  • Job Creation: India’s renewable energy sector could create new jobs and opportunities, especially in rural areas where most of the renewable energy projects will be located. This could help boost local economies and improve living standards for many people.
  • Increased Access to Energy: Given the fact that most of these projects will be located in rural areas, India’s Green Energy Corridor could help improve access to electricity and promote economic development in these areas.

Conclusion:

India’s green energy corridor is a significant initiative to promote renewable energy and create a sustainable future. The project has the potential to transform India’s energy landscape and mitigate the problems associated with conventional sources of energy.
