Ram Prasad Bismil was an Indian revolutionary born on June 11, 1897. His birthplace was Shahjahanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. He adopted the pen name ‘Bismil,’ meaning ‘wounded’ or ‘restless’. This reflected his deep sorrow and determination regarding India’s subjugation. He also used other pen names like ‘Ram’ and ‘Agyat’. Ram Prasad Bismil was part of the Tomar Rajput family.

He believed that British rule could not be ended by prayers alone. According to him, strong action was necessary to break the chains of slavery. He inspired many young revolutionaries, including Ashfaqulla Khan and Chandrashekhar Azad. His name is forever linked with the Kakori Conspiracy, one of the most daring actions against British rule.

Ram Prasad Bismil was born on 11 June 1897 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His father, Murlidhar, was a government employee, and his family followed strict discipline. However, young Bismil had a rebellious spirit. He was deeply influenced by patriotic literature and stories of revolutionaries.

Bismil joined the Arya Samaj, an organization focused on social reform and nationalism. He was inspired by Swami Dayananda Saraswati’s teachings. Early in his life, reading about Bhai Parmanand’s death sentence solidified his revolutionary path. At 18, he wrote the influential poem ‘Mera Janm’. 

This poem expressed his strong desire for India’s freedom. He believed in armed revolution, differing from Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent approach. Here is a brief glimpse into his biography:

Early Life

• In 1924, Bismil helped establish the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).

Ram Prasad Bismil was a gifted poet and writer. His patriotic works resonated deeply with Indian youth. His most famous line is from the poem “Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna Ab Hamare Dil Mein Hai”. The full line is “Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai, dekhna hai zor kitna baazu-e-qatil mein hai”. This line became a slogan of revolution and inspired countless freedom fighters. It showed that Indians were ready to give their lives for independence.

Ram Prasad Bismil Martyrdom

After the Kakori case, the British government wanted to set an example. They sentenced Bismil to death along with Ashfaqulla Khan, Rajendra Lahiri, and Roshan Singh. Despite appeals and public protests, the British authorities did not change their decision. On 19 December 1927, Ram Prasad Bismil was hanged in Gorakhpur Jail. He walked to the gallows with a smile and chanted patriotic slogans. 

Before his execution, he wrote letters and poems expressing love for the nation. He said that his death would inspire millions. His words came true. His sacrifice strengthened the revolutionary movement and fueled the fire of freedom. Uttar Pradesh later renamed ‘Kakori Kand’ to ‘Kakori Train Action’ to honor the revolutionaries.

Bismil’s martyrdom proved that the British could kill bodies but not ideas. Even today, he lives in the hearts of Indians as a symbol of fearless patriotism.
