Tokyo Olympics 2021: The Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympics, officially referred to as the Games of the XXXII Olympiad, constituted a global multi-sport competition that unfolded in Tokyo, Japan, spanning from July 23, 2021, to August 8, 2021. Certain preliminary contests commenced on July 21, 2021. The selection of Tokyo as the host city was made on September 7, 2013, during the 125th IOC Session held in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Boasting an approximate cost of nearly $20 billion, these Games emerged as the most financially substantial in history.
The shared theme in all ceremonies, encompassing both the opening and closing events of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, revolves around the idea of “Progressing Ahead.” Nevertheless, the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games centers on the theme of “Brought Together by Sentiment.”
The Olympic oath holds immense symbolism and significance during the Opening Ceremony. In the Tokyo 2020 Games, the oath has undergone noteworthy modifications to underscore the significance of unity, inclusivity, anti-discrimination, and fairness.
Moreover, the number of individuals taking the oath has been expanded from three to six, encompassing two athletes, two coaches, and two judges. This adjustment aligns with the concerted efforts of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to promote gender equality.

India has secured a total of 10 gold medals across various Olympic Games. Notably, the Indian men’s hockey team has contributed eight of these remarkable victories. Following Abhinav Bindra’s achievement, Neeraj Chopra became the second individual Olympic champion from India.

Mirabai Chanu, the Indian weightlifter, clinched a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Competing in the Women’s 49 kg category, she demonstrated her strength by lifting a total of 202 kg. The gold medal was claimed by China’s Hou Zhihui, who outperformed Chanu. Notably, Chanu’s outstanding performance placed her ahead of Indonesia’s Windy Aisah, who secured the bronze. This achievement added to India’s weightlifting legacy, following Karnam Malleswari’s past success in this category, winning a medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
PV Sindhu, who previously secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, continued her success by adding another medal to her Olympic journey. Building on her silver medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics, she earned a bronze medal in Tokyo. Her victory was achieved by triumphing over China’s He Bing Jiao with scores of 21-13, 21-15 in a dynamic badminton match.
Ravi Dahiya made a significant mark at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo by securing a silver medal in freestyle wrestling within the 57 kg weight division. Dahiya, a two-time Asian champion and 2019 World Wrestling Championships Bronze medalist, showcased his prowess on the mat. Although he displayed formidable skill throughout the tournament, he ultimately faced a tough challenge in the championship match against ROC’s Zavur Uguev, concluding with a score of 4–7.
Bajrang Punia, India’s exceptional wrestler, garnered attention for his exceptional achievements. As the sole Indian wrestler to secure three medals from the World Wrestling Championships, Punia competes in the 65 kg weight division. His remarkable performance led him to claim a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. In the men’s division, he showcased his skills by defeating Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov with a score of 8-0. However, in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 semifinals, he faced a defeat against Azerbaijan’s Haji Aliyev.
The United States emerged as the leader in both total gold medals (39) and total medals (113), closely followed by China in second place in both categories (38 gold and 89 total medals). Japan, the host nation, secured third place with their delegation earning 27 gold medals and a total of 58 medals. Great Britain claimed fourth position with 22 gold medals and a total of 64 medals.
The Russian team, competing under the ROC banner, achieved fifth place with 20 gold medals and a total of 71 medals. Remarkably, Qatar, the Philippines, and Bermuda each secured their first-ever Olympic gold medals, while San Marino, Turkmenistan, and Burkina Faso celebrated their inaugural Olympic medal achievements.

Following a four-decade hiatus, the Indian men’s hockey team has at last secured a coveted Olympic medal.
