Chalukyas of Kalyani: A Legacy of Power and Culture

The Chalukyas of Kalyani, reigning from the 10th to 12th centuries, held sway over the western Deccan and South India, centered around their capital, Kalyani. Through inscriptions and literary works, we glean insights into their rule and achievements, including their conflicts with the Eastern Chalukyas and Cholas over the fertile region of Vengi. Under notable rulers like Taila II and Vikramaditya VI, the empire flourished, leaving behind a rich legacy in arts, literature, and architecture.

Western Chalukya Empire: A Brief Overview

  • Location and Duration: Ruled over western Deccan and South India from the 10th to 12th centuries, with Kalyani as its capital.
  • Historical Sources: Information about the empire is derived from inscriptions and literary works like “Gada Yuddha” and “Vikramankadeva Charitam.”
  • Conflicts with Eastern Chalukyas and Cholas: Fought wars with the Eastern Chalukyas and Chola dynasty for control over Vengi, a fertile region.
  • Establishment of the Chalukyas: Taila II (973-997 AD), the founder of Chalukyas of Kalyani, succeeded the Rashtrakutas, with their capital established in Kalyani (modern Bidar district), Karnataka.

Expansion and Conquests: He subjugated neighbouring realms, including the Gangas of Mysore, Paramaras of Malwa, Chalukyas of Gujarat, and Kalachuris of Chedi.  
  • Chalukya-Chola Rivalry: The period marked a notable Chalukya-Chola rivalry, tacitly accepting the Tungabhadra River as the border between the two kingdoms.
  • Vikramaditya VI:  established the Chalukya-Vikram era in place of the Saka era.
    • Patronage of Scholars: He was patron to eminent scholars like Bilhana, the composer of Vikramanankadevacharita and Vijnaneshvara, the author of Mitakshara (a commentary on the Yajnavalkya Smriti).
  • Architectural Contributions: Developed a transitional architectural style, influencing later empires like the Hoysala. 
  • Promotion of Arts and Literature: Encouraged literature in Kannada and Sanskrit, fostering a rich cultural environment.

  • Decline and End of Rule
    • Expansion and Conflict: The empire reached its peak under Vikramaditya VI but faced internal and external conflicts with the Cholas and feudatories.
    • Succession Issues and Feudatories: Vikramaditya VI’s successors struggled with succession disputes and challenges from powerful feudatories like the Hoysalas and Seunas.
    • Invasion and Loss of Capital: Bijjala II of the Kalachuri dynasty invaded Kalyani, leading to the Chalukyas’ capital being shifted to Annigeri.
    • Final Defeat and Legacy: Attempts to regain power failed, and the Seunas ultimately ended the dynasty, marking the end of a significant era in Deccan history.
  • Legacy and Aftermath
    • Feudatory Conflicts: After the fall of the Chalukyas, the region saw continued warfare among the Seunas, Hoysalas, and Kalachuris.
    • Decline of Chalukya Power and Rise of New Dynasties: By the mid-12th century, the Chalukya reign waned, giving way to the Kakatiyas of Warangal, Hoysalas of Dwarasamudra, and Yadavas of Devagiri
    • Integration into the Chola Empire: The Eastern Chalukyas of Vengi, initially Chola protectorates, were eventually integrated into the Chola Empire under Koluttunga.
