UPSC CMS Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the UPSC CMS 2024, candidates must be 32 years or younger as of August 1, 2024. Age relaxations apply: 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC and disabled defense personnel, 5 years for certain ex-servicemen and SSCO/ECO, and 10 years for PWD candidates. Educational qualifications include passing the MBBS exam and completing practicals.

Final-year MBBS students and those in compulsory internships can apply but must provide certificates later. Nationality requirements include being an Indian citizen or a subject from Nepal, Bhutan, or Tibet (if arrived before 1962), or having migrated from specified countries with the intent to settle in India permanently. UPSC CMS Age Limit

For the UPSC CMS exam, there are specific age limits that candidates must meet:

  • Generally, you should be 32 years old or younger as of August 1, 2024, to apply for the exam.
  • However, if you are applying for the position of Medical Officer in General Duty or the Medical Officers Sub-cadre of Central Health Services, you should be 35 years old or younger on the cut-off date.
  • Female candidates must be 32 years old or younger as of August 1, 2024, meaning their date of birth should be on or after August 2, 1992.

UPSC CMS Age Relaxation

The UPSC CMS examination allows candidates from different categories to apply multiple times based on age relaxations provided. Unreserved category candidates can apply up to 6 times, while OBC candidates have 7 chances. SC/ST candidates can apply an unlimited number of times until they reach 37 years of age. UPSC CMS Physical Standards And Medical Standards

The UPSC Combined Medical Services (CMS) Exam includes specific physical and medical standards that candidates must meet:

Physical Standards

  • Height: 150 cm for women, 165 cm for men
  • Chest girth: 84 cm for men, 79 cm for women (minimum expansion 5 cm)
  • Vision: 6/6 or 6/9 distant vision for males, 6/12 or 6/9 for females
  • Blood pressure: 120/80 mmHg
  • Blood sugar: Less than 140 mg/dl

Medical Standards

  • Normal candidates with undescended testicles are temporarily unfit unless they undergo orchidectomy and provide a negative biopsy report for malignancy.
  • Candidates diagnosed with hydrocele, piles, varicocele, or hernia are temporarily deemed unfit for up to 21 days.
  • Candidates with venereal disease are declared unfit unless detailed examination or serological tests prove negative.

UPSC CMS Educational Qualification

UPSC CMS Nationality

  • An Indian citizen
  • A subject of Nepal or Bhutan
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, intending to settle permanently in India
  • A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Vietnam, or Burma, intending to settle permanently

Non-Indian citizens must have an eligibility certificate issued by the Government of India.

UPSC CMS Exam Pattern

The exam notification typically releases in April, with the exam held in July. Successful candidates proceed to a Personality Test (PT), also known as an interview, conducted by UPSC for those who clear the written exam.

The exam consists of two papers, each lasting two hours, with a maximum of 250 marks per paper. Paper I covers General Medicine, including Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology, and Psychiatry, as well as Paediatrics. Paper II includes Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology, Traumatology, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology & Obstetrics, and Preventive & Social Medicine. Candidates qualifying the written exam are eligible for the Personality Test, which carries 100 marks.

To be eligible for the UPSC CMS exam, candidates must have passed their final M.B.B.S. examination. Those who haven't completed their compulsory rotating internship can also apply, but their admission will be provisional until the internship is completed.

A CMS doctor in UPSC earns Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500, with allowances like NPA, DA, HRA, and TA. The probation period is 1 to 2 years.

Unreserved category candidates can apply up to 6 times, while OBC candidates have 7 attempts. SC/ST candidates can apply an unlimited number of times until they reach 37 years of age.
