UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2027 is one of the most competitive national-level examinations in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to prestigious services such as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, and other Central Civil Services.

The examination is conducted in three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Objective)
  2. Main Examination (Descriptive)
  3. Personality Test (Interview)

UPSC CSE is not just an exam but a multi-stage selection process assessing analytical ability, conceptual clarity, decision-making, and personality suitability for administrative roles.

UPSC Notification 2027

The official UPSC CSE 2027 Notification is released on the UPSC official website (https://upsc.gov.in) as per the annual examination calendar.

  • Notification Release: 13-01-2027
  • Application Window: 02-02-2027
  • Prelims Exam: 23-05-2027 
  • Mains Exam: 20-08-2027 (continues for 5 days)
  • Interview: Early 2028 (tentative)

UPSC Eligibility Criteria 2027

Following are the eligibility criteria for UPSC CSE 2027 as prescribed by the Union Public Service Commission.

1. Nationality

  • IAS & IPS: Citizen of India
  • Other services: Indian citizen or eligible categories as per UPSC rules

2. Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
  • Final year students can apply provisionally

3. Age Limit (Expected)

  • Minimum Age: 21 years
  • Maximum Age: 32 years (General category)

Age Relaxation:

  • OBC: 3 years
  • SC/ST: 5 years
  • PwBD: 10 years

UPSC Exam Pattern 2027

UPSC Exam Pattern 2027 consists of three stages—Prelims, Mains, and Interview—conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

Preliminary Examination

  • Paper I: General Studies (GS) – 200 Marks
  • Paper II: CSAT – 200 Marks (Qualifying nature)
  • Key Features:
    • Objective type (MCQs)
    • Negative marking: 1/3rd for wrong answers

Mains Examination

  • Total: 9 papers 
  • Total Marks: 1750
  • Descriptive/Essay type
  • Includes:
    • Essay Paper
    • GS Paper I–IV
    • Optional Subject (2 papers)
    • Language papers (qualifying)

Interview (Personality Test)

  • 275 Marks
  • Evaluates personality traits, decision-making ability, and administrative suitability

Syllabus for the Examination 

Candidates are advised to go through the Syllabus published in this Section for the Preliminary Examination and the Main Examination, as periodic revision of syllabus has been done in several subjects. 

Part A—Preliminary Examination 

Syllabus of the papers included in the scheme of Civil Services (Prelims) Examination are given as follows:— 

Paper I-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours  

  • Current events of national and international importance.  
  • History of India and Indian National Movement.  
  • Indian and World Geography-Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.  
  • Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.  
  • Economic and Social Development-Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.  
  • General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization.  General Science. 

Paper II-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours  

  • Comprehension;  
  • Interpersonal skills including communication skills;  
  • Logical reasoning and analytical ability;  
  • Decision making and problem solving;  
  • General mental ability;  Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level); 

Part B—Main Examination 

Syllabus of the papers included in the scheme of Civil Services (Main) Examination are given as follows:— 

  • Paper A: One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution
  • Paper B: English
  • Paper I – Essay
  • Paper-II General Studies-I: Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society 
  • Paper-III General Studies- II: Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations. 
  • Paper-IV General Studies-III: Technology, Economic Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management 
  • Paper-V General Studies- IV: Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude 
  • Paper-VI & Paper VII: Optional Subject Papers I & II Candidate may choose any optional subject from amongst the List of Optional Subjects given in Para 2. 

UPSC Vacancy 2027

UPSC does not fix vacancies in advance. The number of vacancies varies each year depending on government requirements.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced 933 tentative vacancies for the 2026 Civil Services Examination (CSE). 

A more detailed breakdown of the 933 total vacancies includes: 

  • Total Posts: 933 (across 21 All-India and Central Services, including IAS, IPS, and IFS)
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD): 33 seats reserved (Blindness and Low Vision: 7, Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 11)
