UPSC Mains 2026 Pattern

UPSC Mains examination consists of nine papers in total. Out of these, two are qualifying in nature, and the remaining seven are considered to rank the candidate. Each paper is assigned a different total mark. The exams are conducted over a period of five to seven days.

Paper-A (Indian Language) Candidates have to opt for any one language from the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution for this paper. This paper will test your comprehension skills, expression of thought, and translation skills effectively into the chosen language.
Paper-B (English) This paper assesses your basic English skills, namely reading comprehension, précis writing, grammar usage, and writing essay-style answers.
Essay Candidates have to write multiple essays on various topics, reflecting clarity of thought, structured argumentation, and a balanced perspective.
General Studies Paper I Covers Indian Heritage, History, and Culture; Geography of the World; and Society.
General Studies Paper II It focuses on the Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, Governance, and International Relations.
General Studies Paper III Includes development, biodiversity, environment, security, technology, economic, and disaster management.
General Studies Paper IV Assess moral philosophy, public administration ethics, and case study analysis, Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude
Optional Subject Paper I The syllabus is based on one optional subject chosen from the official list.
