While each phase has its significant role, the UPSC Mains holds the ultimate decision-making authority in selecting candidates.

It consists of nine papers (7+2), including two qualifying language papers- (Paper A) and English Paper (Paper B) , and seven merit-based (Marks of these 7 Papers are counted for rank and cut off) papers that assess the candidate’s understanding of various subjects. These subjects include topics such as essay writing, General Studies Paper- I, II, III and IV, and an optional subject chosen by the candidate from a list of available options.
  • Each paper in the UPSC Main Examination is of a descriptive nature and is evaluated meticulously to gauge the candidate’s depth of knowledge, clarity of thought, and ability to present ideas coherently.
    • The language papers are qualifying in nature and require candidates to score a minimum level of competence in English and a regional language.
  • The merit-based papers are instrumental in ranking candidates for further selection stages, including the interview round.
