Marathi Literature Optional Syllabus: A Brief Overview

Marathi is a language belonging to the Indo-Aryan language branch of Indian languages and is spoken mainly in Maharashtra. The language also has speakers in the states of Karnataka, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Telangana, etc.

Candidates opting for Marathi literature are expected to study about how the language works and the factors that affect the development of its dialects. In addition, candidates will study criticism of famous works, poetry, and prose by renowned writers. 

The Marathi literature syllabus consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II, each carrying 250 marks. Both papers consist of eight questions, which are divided equally into two sections, each containing four questions. Candidates have to attempt any five questions, with Question 1 and Question 5 being compulsory. Out of the remaining six, any three have to be attempted, choosing at least one from each section.

As mentioned above, candidates taking up Marathi literature will have to study concepts from linguistics, such as the basic functions of language and factors that influence dialect development. In addition, literary criticism of renowned Marathi writers and reading prose and poetry are also necessary.

Paper I of the syllabus covers language and folklore related to Marathi culture, the history of literature, and literary criticism of Marathi. The detailed syllabus is as follows:

  1. Nature and Functions of Language (with reference to Marathi) 
    1. Language as a signifying system: Langue and Parole; Basic functions; Poetic Language; Standard Language and dialect; Language variations according to social parameters.
    2. Linguistic features of Marathi in the thirteenth century and seventeenth century. 
  2. Dialects of Marathi 
    1. Ahirani; Varhadi; Dangi. 
  3. Marathi Grammar 
    1. Parts of Speech; Case-system; Prayog-vichar (Voice). 
  4. Nature and kinds of Folk-lore (with special reference to Marathi) 
    1. Lok-Geet, Lok Katha, Lok Natya.
Section B: History of Literature and Literary Criticism
  1. History of Marathi Literature 
    1. From beginning to 1818 AD, with special reference to the following: The Mahanubhava writers, the Varkari poets, the Pandit poets, the Shahirs, Bakhar Literature. 
    2. From 1850 to 1990, with special reference to developments in the following major forms: Poetry, Fiction (Novel and Short Story), Drama; and major literary currents and movements, Romantic, Realist, Modernist, Dalit, Gramin, Feminist. 
  2. Literary Criticism 
    1. Nature and function of Literature; 
    2. Evaluation of Literature; 
    3. Nature, Objectives and Methods of Criticism; 
    4. Literature, Culture and Society.
