Van Mahotsav 2024: Van Mahotsav, literally means “Forest Festival” is a noteworthy event that has reiterates India’s stance on One Earth One Family One Future. Van Mahotsav 2024 is a part of the annual week-long tree plantation festival, celebrated during the first week of July, every year in India. Importantly, It is a national festival and many stakeholders participate actively in this program for a global cause.

Van Mahotsav, the forest festival was conceptualized and initiated as a national activity in 1950 by the then Union Minister of Agriculture and Food, Dr. K.M. Munshi Ji. The idea behind Van Mahotsav is attributed to M.S. Randhawa,a Punjabi botanist who organized a week-long tree plantation activity from 20-27 July in 1947, which was attended by many renowned personalities at that time.
Van Mahotsav, the tree-planting festival in India highlights the cultural and environmental significance of forests in India, which is not just a mere commodity rather being worshiped in many parts of India. Since 1950, Van Mahotsav has been celebrated annually to plant more trees, to increase the forest cover of India and to create awareness about the importance of planting trees for present and future generations.
Van Mahotsav week 2024 is a nationwide celebration of tree planting activities. Van Mahotsav week is celebrated from July 1st to July 7th. This week is chosen because of the fact that in many parts of India this period experiences the south-west monsoon, providing a favorable condition for afforestation. The Van Mahotsav week is celebrated not only with afforestation but also with a variety of activities such as cultural programs, awareness campaigns, educational seminars etc. The primary goal behind the Van Mahotsav week is to promote the importance of forests for maintaining ecological balance.
Van Mahotsav Day is particularly celebrated on July 1st, marking it the most important day of the Van Mahotsav Week. Van Mahotsav Day serves as a significant day that sees Vast majority of tree plantation drives with the participation of many stakeholders such as government bodies, non profit organizations, educational institutions and many individuals as well. This day particularly gives the message of planting trees to make the earth sustainable and healthy.
The main motto behind Van Mohatsav Day/ Week is to plant as many trees as possible for a green earth. As per latest India State of Forest Report (ISFR 2021), India is ranked 10th in the world, with 24.4% of land area under forest and tree cover, even though it accounts for 2.4 % of the world surface. Similarly, the National Forest Policy (NFP) 1988 envisages that 33% of the geographical area should be under forest or tree cover. Therefore, an event like Van Mohatsav has significant values.
