World Food Safety Day Foundation Year

World Food Safety Day started in 2019, following the adoption of UN General Assembly resolution 73/250 on 20 December 2018. The resolution was introduced with support from Costa Rica, the FAO, and the World Health Organisation (WHO). Since its inception, the day has gained global traction, becoming an important milestone in supporting for safer food systems.

World Food Safety Day Declaration

World Food Safety Day was officially declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2018 following a collaborative proposal by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). The declaration recognised the growing global burden of foodborne illnesses and the critical need to raise awareness and promote coordinated efforts to ensure food safety across all sectors.

The resolution emphasised that food safety is a shared responsibility—from farmers and food handlers to consumers and government authorities. The UN General Assembly’s decision marked a significant milestone in elevating food safety as a global public health priority, leading to the first celebration on 7 June 2019.

Importance of World Food Safety Day

Unsafe food poses a serious threat to human health and economic stability. Each year:

  • Over 600 million people suffer from foodborne illnesses.
  • Approximately 420,000 people die due to contaminated food.
  • Children under the age of five account for 125,000 of these deaths.

These disturbing figures reveal the immense burden of foodborne disease, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. World Food Safety Day 2025 is a call to action to reduce these numbers by embedding food safety practices in every layer of food production and consumption.

World Food Safety Day 2025 Activities

Celebrating World Food Safety Day 2025 involves a variety of activities aimed at increasing public awareness and promoting action:

  1. Workshops and Webinars: Governments and institutions can organise sessions to discuss scientific advancements in food safety.
  2. Public Awareness Campaigns: Social media drives, posters, and infographics help inform people about foodborne risks.
  3. Educational Outreach: Schools and universities can incorporate lessons and projects that explore safe food handling and hygiene.
  4. Food Safety Demonstrations: Food businesses and NGOs can conduct practical demonstrations on best practices in food storage, preparation, and handling.
  5. Community Events: Local groups can host food festivals or clean-up drives to emphasise environmental hygiene and food safety.

These World Food Safety Day activities help bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and everyday practices.

Science at the Heart of Food Safety

Science plays an essential role in food safety, guiding:

  • Risk assessments to identify and mitigate food hazards.
  • Surveillance systems to monitor foodborne pathogens.
  • Regulatory frameworks for setting maximum limits on contaminants.
  • Public health responses during outbreaks of foodborne illnesses.

Organisations like Codex Alimentarius Commission, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), and JEMRA (Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meetings on Microbiological Risk Assessment) have laid the groundwork for modern food safety systems. These bodies ensure that international standards are based on rigorous scientific review.
