Organ Donation in India

Organ donation in India has seen significant progress over the years, but the demand for organs still far exceeds the supply. World Organ Donation Day 2024 provides an important platform to discuss and address the challenges related to organ donation in India.

Organ donation is the process of giving an organ to someone in need of a transplant. It can involve a living donor or a deceased donor. Donating organs such as kidneys, liver, heart, lungs, pancreas, and intestines can save up to eight lives. Awareness campaigns and events on this day focus on educating the public about the process of organ donation and the impact it can have on saving lives.

In 2023, India significantly advanced in the field of organ transplants, conducting 1,851 transplants for foreign nationals, which accounted for nearly 10% of all transplants performed in the country as per the reports. The majority of these transplants occurred in Delhi, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.

Foreign patients are primarily attracted to India for living donor transplants due to the comparatively lower costs and stringent vetting protocols.

However, India has made remarkable progress, setting records with over 1,000 deceased donors and a total of 18,378 transplants in 2023. This highlights India’s growing role as a global hub for organ transplantation, attracting patients from countries like the US and UK who seek affordable and reliable medical care.

In 2021, India performed 12,259 organ transplants, contributing 8% to global transplants. Despite these efforts, the demand remains high, with over 175,000 kidneys, 50,000 livers, and many other organs needed annually.
