World Population Day History

World Population Day history dates back to July 11, 1987, when the world’s population reached approximately 5 billion people. World Population Day was inspired by the ‘Day of Five Billion’ on 11th July 1987, when the global population reached the 5 billion mark. The anxiety over fast-paced population growth demanded a more serious approach. As a result, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) promoted the idea and initiated this day to address the urgency and importance of global population issues more seriously. 

After that day, every year on July 11th, World Population Day is celebrated globally to focus on various aspects of population-related challenges and to find and apply solutions.

World Population Day 2024 Theme

Every year, a specific World Population Day 2024 Theme is dedicated that focuses on particular aspects of issues related to population.
