World Standards Day 2025 is celebrated around the world on October 14 each year to recognize and celebrate the collaborative efforts of experts from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). These three organizations develop voluntary international standards that simplify, standardize, and harmonize life to make it easier, safer, and more predictable for people worldwide.

These individuals help to keep industries and nations connected with global trade while also ensuring product safety, compatibility, and mutual benefit.

About World Standards Day 2025 

World Standards Day 2025 aims to raise public awareness of how standards form the basis of modern development. It shows that every aspect of globalisation and trade has agreed-upon technical details. This includes everything from the dimensions of electrical plugs and sockets to the safety of food packaging and the quality of building materials. Standards are also what make global trade so efficient and consumer-friendly.

The very first World Standards Day was observed in 1970, and since then, it has become one of the biggest contributing factors for awareness about standardization and how it benefits technology, safety, and international trade.

World Standards Day 2025 Theme

The theme for World Standards Day 2025, “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Standards for Sustainable Development Goals,” is centred around the role of standards in helping the world achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It demonstrates how standards are not just technical specifications but also a means of uniting governments, industry, academia, and communities.

What are Standards? 

A Standard is a written document that describes the right way to design, build and test materials, products and services. It is a written document which is agreed upon by the best experts after a thorough study and discussion on the topic. Standards ensure that the materials, goods and services we use are safe, reliable and of good quality.

For example, there is a standard to define how much voltage an electric bulb should be able to handle or how much load a bridge can take to carry vehicles safely. Agreed upon such rules, different products of different companies can work together.

Importance of Standards

Standards are very important because they bring structure, safety, and reliability to the world around us. Standards help to ensure that products and services are safe to use, of good quality, and reliable.

Bureau of Indian Standards

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national body responsible for developing and maintaining standards. It was established on April 1, 1987, and replaced the earlier Indian Standards Institution (ISI), which had been in place since 1947.

• Ministry: BIS works under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and operates according to the BIS Act, 2016. 
• Headquarters: The head office is located in New Delhi, and there are five regional offices in Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Chandigarh, and Delhi, with more than 20 branch offices nationwide.
• Aim: The main goal of BIS is to promote quality, safety, and reliability in goods and services. 
  • It also provides the ISI mark and Hallmark certification that assures consumers of product safety and authenticity.
• Role: During World Standards Day 2025, BIS plays an active role in promoting awareness about the importance of standardization in national and international growth.

Indian National Strategy for Standardization (INSS)

The National Strategy for Standardization in India (INSS) was introduced in June 2018 at the Fifth National Standards Conclave. It lays out India’s standardization journey’s blueprint. 

• The INSS took shape after many years of dialogue between the government, industry, and academia from 2014 to 2017. It’s about enhancing India’s quality structure and making it trade-ready.
• India intends to become a powerful participant in the global standardization process via the INSS. The standards for Indian products and services will reach a worldwide level via this.
